English Vinglish to release in 6,000 theatres in China on February 24 on Sridevi's 5th death anniversary

Late actor Sridevi’s critically-acclaimed film English Vinglish will be released in China on February 24 to commemorate her fifth death anniversary. The 2012 blockbuster film will hit 6,000 theaters on the Chinese mainland, according to distributor Eros International.

Directed by Gauri Shinde, the film marked the comeback of Sridevi after 15-year hiatus. English Vinglish had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received a five-minute standing ovation. The film was also India’s official entry to the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category for 2013.

The comedy-drama film revolves around Shashi Godbole (played by Sridevi), a quiet, sweet-tempered, and naive housewife. She decides to go to the US to learn English after being mocked by her well-educated husband and daughter. After meeting friends in her new class, she starts to feel more confident about herself and affirms her importance through her attempt to learn the language.

The story of English Vinglish was inspired by Shinde’s mother who ran a business of spices and often wished she knew English to help further.

Kumar Ahuja, COO of Eros International, in a statement said that Indian films have gradually gained a foothold in the competitive Chinese film market, the second biggest in the world. We have seen a rising demand for Indian films in China Mainland, especially the ones which are culturally driven. We are excited for the audience in China to marvel at this masterpiece showcasing one of the most memorable performances by the late Bollywood superstar Sridevi, he added.

English Vinglish was released on October 5, 2012. The film also stars Adil Hussain, Sumeet Vyas, Priya Anand, Sulabha Deshpande, and French actor Mehdi Nebbou.

Sridevi was found dead in Dubai’s JW Marriot on February 24, 2018, where she was accompanied by her family to attend the wedding of her nephew Mohit Marwah.
