The popular Malayali festival, Onam is finally here. This festival will be observed today on August 21. It is believed that on this day, Lord Mahabali returns to earth and visits the home of every Malayali family. The Malayali harvest festival is celebrated with simple activities like laying the pookalam, the flower designs broadly called rangoli in the North, then to singing and making delicious food as part of the Onam Sadhya. Among the festivities, food is the most important aspect of Onam. Every morning, grandmothers and mothers prepare vegetarian food which is served on a the traditional banana leaf.

Here are some recipes for you to cook and enjoy as part of your own Onam Sadhya at home:

Chakka Pradhaman (Jackfruit Payasam)

Chakka Pradhaman is one of the most popular dishes for Onam that is prepared using jackfruit jam (Chakka Varatti). The jackfruit is the fruit version of the kaththal vegetable. It is naturally sweet and has a unique tang that comes close to a ripe banana.

Unniappam-Neyyappam

This is a sweet made by mixing rice, jaggery, ghee and banana into balls and deep fried. These deep-fried rounds are irresistibly sweet and are among traditional recipes made on Onam Sadhya. The calorie-conscious will have to think of some way to boost one’s capacity to withstand temptation.

Olan

Simple and delicious, Olan is prepared with coconut milk and pumpkin. This is a curry of the pumpkin in which there is next to no spice and its taste comes from the freshly grated coconut milk that is added at the end. You can also use either the black-eyed peas or the red ones to add zing.

Erissery

Erissery is another delicious recipe for Onam Sadhya. This traditional Kerala dish is prepared with legumes, vegetables like pumpkin, and coconut gravy. This has a sweet and sour taste.

Pulissery

This Onam Sadhya recipe is prepared with grated coconut and yogurt. Some vegetables and fruits are added in this dish to balance the taste. Mambazha Pulissery is made with ripe mangoes, grated coconut and yogurt with mustard seeds.

Each one of these dishes in alliance with each other make the Onam Sadhya transcendent one. While Mahabali may be an Asura king, Christian and Muslim families also partake in the welcoming of the benefactor king with their own spreads including some of the above items often accompanied by meats and spicy curries.
