In a significant political development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators have unanimously chosen former Chief Minister and senior party leader Atishi as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The decision marks a strategic move by the AAP to strengthen its position in the assembly as it seeks to hold the ruling BJP accountable on key issues affecting the national capital.
Atishi, a prominent figure in Delhi politics and a close confidante of AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, brings a wealth of experience to the role. As a former education minister and a key architect of Delhi’s education reforms, she has been instrumental in shaping the AAP’s policy agenda. Her appointment as Leader of the Opposition is seen as a reflection of the party’s confidence in her ability to effectively challenge the BJP-led central government’s policies and advocate for Delhi’s interests.
The decision was made during a meeting of AAP MLAs held at the party headquarters today. During a press conference, AAP leader Gopal Rai announced, “We convened a meeting of the AAP legislative party where we elected our legislative party leader. Sandeep Pathak was appointed as the observer, and despite his absence, the election proceeded smoothly.”
“With unanimous agreement, Atishi has been chosen as our legislative party leader. The people have entrusted AAP with the role of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, where Atishi will serve as the Leader of the Opposition. AAP is committed to holding the BJP accountable for the promises made during the election campaign, and it is now Atishi’s duty to uphold the accomplishments our party achieved during its time in power,” he added.
Atishi expressed her gratitude by stating, “I am thankful to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal for entrusting me with the role of Leader of the Opposition in the legislative party. The public has assigned us the responsibility of serving as the opposition, and AAP will demonstrate what a robust opposition looks like.”
Atishi’s elevation comes at a critical juncture for the AAP, which has been locked in a bitter political tussle with the BJP over issues such as statehood for Delhi, control of administrative services, and funding for key projects. In her new role, Atishi is expected to spearhead the party’s efforts to counter the BJP’s narrative and highlight the AAP government’s achievements in areas like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
The BJP, however, dismissed the AAP’s decision as a “cosmetic change” and accused the party of failing to address the concerns of Delhi’s residents. “The AAP has consistently failed to deliver on its promises, and this change in leadership will not alter that reality,” said Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva.
As the new Leader of the Opposition, Atishi faces the dual challenge of uniting her party’s MLAs and effectively countering the BJP’s dominance in the assembly. With Delhi’s political landscape becoming increasingly polarized, her role will be pivotal in shaping the AAP’s future trajectory and its efforts to retain its stronghold in the national capital.
The coming months are likely to see heightened political activity in the Delhi Assembly, as Atishi and her team work to hold the government accountable.
