Earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR areas on Thursday afternoon.
According to the National Center for Seismology, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on Richter scale had hit Afghanistan, and tremors were felt in north India. The National Capital Region that felt earthquake tremors were Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram.
The nodal agency on X, formerly Twitter, said that the earthquake of magnitude 6.1, occurred on January 11 at 2:50 pm, Lat: 36.48 and Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km, location: Afghanistan.
According to reports, the northern parts of India including, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Punjab also felt tremors.
Tremors were also felt in Lahore, Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cities, as per the reports.
On January 11, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck 44 km SSW of Jurm in Afghanistan at 2:50 pm. The earthquake was felt in Lahore, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cities in Pakistan. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of 206.6 km.
As of now, there have been no reports of any casualties or damage to property. The earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, occurred at 2:20 pm (local time) in the Hindu Kush region, with a depth of 213 kms, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
Several cities were shaken by the earthquake, including Sargodha, Khushab, Mandi Bahauddin, Bhakkar, and Nowshera. Reports suggest that tremors were also felt in Muzaffarabad, which is in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
According to a report, due to the high intensity of the recent earthquake, there is a high likelihood of experiencing aftershocks in the region. Sardar Sarfaraz, the chief meteorologist at PMD, has stated that a similar situation occurred in Japan when the country was hit by a powerful earthquake on January 1.
It’s worth mentioning that Pakistan is situated in a seismic region and often experiences tremors and quakes of varying intensity. In October 2005, the country was hit by its deadliest earthquake, which claimed the lives of over 74,000 people and caused widespread devastation.
