[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Punjab government has been facing flak from all quarters for failing to prevent the targeted killings of religious leaders in the state.

Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh said on Tuesday that the targeted killings of religious leaders in Punjab are not isolated incidents but part of a conspiracy hatched by Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI).

“There was a major conspiracy to fan communal disturbances and destabilise the state, hatched by the ISI in Pakistan and other countries,” Singh said at a press conference.

Singh also announced the arrest of four suspects in the cases and claimed that the police have solved seven out of the eight cases of targeted killings.

“The interrogation of the four conspirators showed they had met and been trained in various places abroad and had been using encrypted mobile software/ apps for communication with handlers based in Pakistan and some western countries,” he added.

The Punjab government had been facing severe criticism from the opposition as well as from within the ruling party for failing to prevent the targeted killings of religious leaders in the state.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1510132544697{margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-bottom-width: 20px !important;padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;background-color: #a2b1bf !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Punjab government to bring PCOCA act to counter such killings

In line with the Maharashtra’s MCOCA, Punjab government is all set to bring in the Punjab Control of Organised Crime Act (PCOCA) to efficiently deal with the menace of organised crime and gangsters in the state.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday said he has asked the cabinet sub-committee to complete the modalities and bring in the legislation within a month.

The law, when enacted, will provide wide powers to the police to take any action as needed to control gangsters and criminal gangs operation in the state.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In the past two years, Punjab has witnessed eight instances of targeted killing of religious leaders. These include Shiv Sena leader Durgadas Gupta, RSS leader Jagdish Gagneja, Sri Hindu Takht official Amit Sharma, Pastor Sultan Masih, Namdhari sect head Chand Kaur, RSS leader Ravinder Gosain and Dera Sacha Sauda followers Satpal and Ramesh Kumar.

Police claims to have solved all of the above cases except the case of Namdhari sect head Chand Kaur.

Speaking at the same press conference, Punjab DGP Suresh Arora said the murders that took place in Ludhiana, Khanna and Jalandhar since 2016 were connected and carried out by the same gang as similar weapons were used in all the eight cases.

The arrested accused have been identified as Jimmy Singh, a Jammu resident who recently returned to India from the UK, Jagtar Singh, a UK national who was apprehended in Jalandhar, and Dharmendra alias Guggni, a gangster from Meherban in Ludhiana, who is believed to have supplied weapons to the killers. The identity of the fourth accused was not disclosed as his interrogation was continuing.

However, Arora refused to completely rule out such incidents in the future in view of Punjab being a border state, with “international conspirators working against it”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

While PM Modi delivers teleprompter speeches on AI, India’s competitors are mastering new technologies: Rahul Gandhi

Taking a swipe at PM Modi, Gandhi added, “Unfortunately, PM Modi has failed to grasp this. While he delivers ‘teleprompter’ speeches on AI, our competitors are mastering new technologies. India needs a strong production base, not empty words.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday emphasized the need for India to build a robust industrial base to harness its talent and compete globally in emerging technologies like drone manufacturing. The Leader of the Opposition criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach, accusing him of relying on “empty words” rather than fostering real industrial growth.

In a post on X, Gandhi highlighted China’s advancements in drone technology, which are revolutionizing warfare globally, and stressed that India must develop a strategic vision to become competitive in this field. “Drones have revolutionized warfare, combining batteries, motors, and optics to manoeuvre and communicate on the battlefield in unprecedented ways. But drones are not just one technology—they are bottom-up innovations produced by a strong industrial system,” he wrote.

Taking a swipe at PM Modi, Gandhi added, “Unfortunately, PM Modi has failed to grasp this. While he delivers ‘teleprompter’ speeches on AI, our competitors are mastering new technologies. India needs a strong production base, not empty words.”

The Congress leader underscored India’s potential, stating, “India has immense talent, scale, and drive. We must have a clear vision and build real industrial prowess to give our youth jobs and lead India into the future.”

Gandhi also shared a nine-minute video on drone technology, showcasing India’s engineering capabilities and talent. He reiterated that with the right focus and investment, India can develop cutting-edge technologies to secure its future and create employment opportunities for its youth.

The post reflects Gandhi’s ongoing critique of the Modi government’s economic and industrial policies, particularly in the context of job creation and technological innovation. As India strives to position itself as a global leader in emerging sectors, Gandhi’s call for a stronger industrial base highlights the challenges and opportunities in the country’s path to technological self-reliance.

PM Modi has often highlighted the role of AI in addressing social challenges and improving the quality of life for citizens. He has spoken about using AI in areas like healthcare, agriculture, education, and disaster management to create inclusive growth.

New India Co-operative Bank: Mumbai Police book general manager in Rs 122 crore fraud case

The RBI’s oversight is set to last for twelve months, and customers of the bank can claim deposit insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh.

The Mumbai Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Hitesh Mehta, the General Manager and Head of Accounts at New India Co-operative Bank, for allegedly misappropriating ₹122 crore from the bank’s safe deposit boxes. This FIR was officially registered at Dadar police station in the early hours of February 15, and the case has since been transferred to the Economic Offences Wing for further investigation.

In their statement, the police indicated that Mehta, along with his accomplices, allegedly committed a criminal breach of trust in his capacity as General Manager and Head of Accounts. The police report claims that they misappropriated around ₹122 crore kept in trust within the bank’s safe deposit boxes located at both the Prabhadevi and Goregaon branches.

This police action follows a significant intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which recently superseded the board of the New India Co-operative Bank due to severe liquidity issues. The RBI has restricted the bank from issuing new loans, accepting deposits, and permitting withdrawals while allowing administrative operations, such as the payment of staff salaries and utilities, to continue.

To manage the bank’s operations during this period, a three-member committee led by former SBI Chief General Manager Shreekant has been appointed. The RBI’s oversight is set to last for twelve months, and customers of the bank can claim deposit insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh.

The RBI’s actions have instigated widespread panic among the bank’s customers. Many rushed to the branches on Friday morning in an effort to access their savings, only to find that they were barred from entering the premises. New India Co-operative Bank operates 28 branches primarily located throughout Mumbai, along with two branches in Surat, Gujarat, and one in Pune.

As this troubling situation unfolds, the focus remains on the investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds and the broader implications for the bank’s operations and its clients. Customers are anxious about the security of their deposits amid these developments.
