The AAP MP Raghav Chadha has urged the government to adopt urgent measures for combating piracy on OTT platforms since the financial loss to the concerned film industry is huge. Chadha, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, said that the industry suffers an estimated annual loss of ₹20,000 crores because of piracy, which has demoralised the hard work and creative efforts of the artists.
“Years of hard work of an artist goes down the drain because of piracy. The industry is suffering losses of ₹ 20,000 crores per annum annually due to piracy,” Chadha said. His remarks come amid growing concerns over the surge in online piracy, which saw a 62% increase during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He tweeted, “Piracy is a big menace. It is omnipresent in the film industry and now in the OTT world. Online piracy increased by 62 percent during the pandemic. We passed the Cinematographic Amendment Bill a year back; it does not have any solid mechanism against online piracy. It is more towards anti-cam recording in the multiplexes.”
“The existing laws are not sufficient to deal with the threats of digital piracy. We need a separate legislation that can meet the complexities of online piracy,” Chadha said. He, therefore, urged the government to come up with comprehensive measures that would help make the content creators for the economic viability of the film and OTT industries.
Chadha berated the existing law for being narrow in its scope and not stringent enough to meet the challenge of digital piracy, now worse with the growth of streaming services. He said the Cinematographic Amendment Bill passed last year makes a big hue and cry about the question of unauthorized recording in cinemas but simply fails to curb the menace of online piracy.
Chadha’s call for action comes amidst a growing urgency within the industry to find effective solutions to the problem of increasingly becoming piracy. The need for a robust legal framework to protect intellectual property and the creative economy has assumed importance like never before with the continuous rise in digital consumption.
The appeal of the AAP leader therefore underlines the need for a collaborative role among the government, industry stakeholders, and digital platforms in developing and implementing strategies that are aimed at eradicating piracy and protecting the interests of the artists and producers.
