As part of a broader national preparedness strategy, the Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) conducted a mock drill at Dal Lake in Srinagar on Tuesday, focusing on a simulated boat capsize scenario. The exercise is part of a Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directive aimed at bolstering civil defence mechanisms across various states.
Mock drills to enhance civil defence awareness
In anticipation of coordinated mock drills scheduled nationwide for May 7, SDRF personnel engaged in live demonstrations to display equipment use and emergency response tactics for water-based accidents. Arif Hussain, a team member from SDRF, explained that the drill was initiated under MHA orders received a day earlier. “We are here following that order to simulate a boat capsize scenario and showcase our preparedness,” he said.
Another official reiterated the significance of such preparedness exercises, particularly given the region’s topographical and security sensitivities.
Centre’s strategy amid rising tensions
The nationwide mock drills coincide with heightened security concerns following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people, predominantly tourists. In response, the Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan convened a high-level meeting attended by officials from Civil Defence and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), focusing on strengthening civil defence frameworks.
Among the planned activities are the activation of Air Raid Warning Sirens, civilian training for emergency response, blackout drills, and rapid evacuation planning, all aimed at simulating responses to hostile threats or wartime contingencies.
Blackout rehearsals and military readiness
Amid the increased tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam incident, blackout rehearsals have already begun in sensitive areas. On Sunday, a 30-minute complete blackout was carried out in the Ferozepur Cantonment area. Local police ensured compliance, turning off any vehicle lights found in operation during the drill.
SHO Gurjant Singh confirmed, “The blackout drill was conducted from 9 pm to 9:30 pm under the direction of senior officers. Police deployment was in place at all intersections to ensure full observance.”
Government’s firm stance on security and diplomacy
The Indian government has granted full operational autonomy to the armed forces in determining an appropriate response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Additionally, the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty stands as one of several strategic moves intended to convey a stern warning to Pakistan regarding its support of cross-border terrorism.
