[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Led by Congress, seven other opposition parties — CPI, CPI(M), NCP, SP, BSP and IUML — on Friday met Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu and handed over a notice for impeachment of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra on Friday, April 20.

Addressing a press conference, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress said, “We have moved a motion for impeachment against the CJI, on five grounds of misbehaviour.”[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]According to the Constitution, a minimum of 50 members are required to agree to the motion. Azad claimed to have 71 members supporting the motion. “We have submitted a motion signed by 71 people. It also includes seven members who are retired. That should not be counted,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying.

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal said, “We wish that this day had never come. As representatives of people we are entitled to hold the CJI accountable just as we are accountable.”

“Since the day he (Dipak Misra) was appointed as CJI there have been questions raised in the manner in which he has dealt with certain cases,” said Sibal.

“Questions have been raised about his conduct. It showed in the January 12 press conference of four judges of Supreme Court. One concern of the four judges was memorandum of procedure was being unsettled,” media reports quoted Sibal as saying.

Sibal was referring to an extraordinary press conference called in January by four most senior SC judges.

“When the judges of the Supreme Court themselves believe that the judiciary’s independence is at threat, alluding to the functioning of the office of the CJI, should the nation stand still and do nothing?” Sibal asked.

The Congress leader said the concern of all those who’ve signed the impeachment notice is that democracy is being undermined.

“Impeachment is the only recourse to save the judiciary,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the leaders of the Opposition parties met Azad in his chamber in Parliament.

The Opposition has been working on bringing various parties on board for a larger consensus on bringing an impeachment motion against the CJI.

While the Left parties, the NCP and the Congress are on board for moving a motion, some parties that signed the petition have backed out. Media reports quoting sources said West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and Tamil Nadu’s opposition DMK, which were initially in favour of the impeachment against the CJI, are no longer part of it.

Congress leaders said the parties had to move the notice with a “heavy heart” since Justice Misra had not “asserted the independence of judiciary in the face of interference by the executive”.

The notice comes a day after the Supreme Court rejected a clutch of petitions seeking an independent probe into the death of Judge BH Loya, who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case. The SC judgment was delivered by a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India.

Loya, who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Shah encounter case in which BJP president Amit Shah was one of those named, died of a heart attack in Nagpur in December 2014. Shah was discharged from the case by the successor judge.

The Congress has attacked the SC judgment on the investigation of Loya’s death as a “sad letter day” , saying there should be a fair investigation into the matter. Congress president Rahul Gandhi said India will not allow judge Loya to be forgotten.

” ‘There is no hope left, everything is managed’ say Judge Loya’s family. I want to tell them, there is hope. There is hope because millions of Indians can see the truth. India will not allow Judge Loya to be forgotten,” tweeted Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress yesterday called the judgement “a sad letter day” in India’s history.

“It is a sad letter day in India’s history. The suspicious circumstances in which Loya died, was a matter of deep concern for those who have faith in the judiciary. The copy of the entire judgment is not yet available. But there are still questions before those who believe in the judiciary,” said Congress spokesman RS Surjewala.

The SC ruled on Thursday rejected the plea to investigate the judge’s death saying it was bereft of any truth and called it an attempt “to malign the judiciary”. It further said judge Loya died a natural death and there was no doubt about that fact.

The court rapped the petitioners and said it would have been ideal to initiate contempt proceedings against them in the case where political rivalry was brought to court to malign the judiciary.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Delhi High Court denies interim relief to Telegram in challenge against NEET-related ban

Telegram did not receive interim relief from the Delhi High Court in its challenge to the Centre’s temporary restriction imposed before the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.

Delhi High Court issues notice to the Centre but does not stay the temporary restriction imposed ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.

Messaging platform Telegram has not received interim relief from the Delhi High Court in its challenge to the Centre’s temporary restriction on the app ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.

The court issued notice to the Union government and agreed to hear the matter, but did not pass any immediate order suspending the restriction. The temporary curbs were imposed until June 22 as part of measures aimed at preventing exam-related fraud and the circulation of fake paper leak claims before the June 21 re-test.

Telegram has argued that the restriction affects millions of users and is disproportionate to the alleged misuse by a small number of individuals. The company has also questioned the legality and procedure followed while imposing the restriction.

During the proceedings, the Centre defended its decision, maintaining that the measure was necessary to protect the integrity of the high-stakes medical entrance examination. Government representatives argued that Telegram had been used to spread leaked exam material, misinformation and fraudulent claims linked to the examination process.

The court sought the Centre’s response and scheduled further consideration of the matter. Until a final decision is reached, the temporary restriction remains in effect.

The dispute comes amid heightened scrutiny of examination security following the cancellation of the original NEET-UG 2026 exam and the decision to conduct a re-examination for affected candidates.

IT stocks drag markets lower as Accenture outlook sparks selloff

A sharp selloff in IT stocks after Accenture’s weak outlook weighed on Indian markets, pushing Sensex and Nifty lower while major technology shares recorded significant losses.

Indian equity benchmarks came under pressure on Friday as a sharp decline in information technology stocks erased a portion of the gains made during the recent market rally. Weak guidance from global technology services giant Accenture triggered concerns about demand trends in the IT sector, leading to broad-based selling across major Indian technology companies.

The benchmark Sensex and Nifty opened lower, while the Nifty IT index emerged as the worst-performing sectoral gauge of the day. Shares of major IT firms, including TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCLTech, witnessed steep declines as investors reacted to concerns over slowing technology spending and limited visibility on future demand.

Accenture guidance rattles investor confidence

Market sentiment weakened after Accenture reported quarterly results and revised its revenue outlook, citing softer demand conditions. The development raised concerns about the broader global technology services industry, particularly for Indian IT companies that derive a significant portion of their revenue from overseas clients.

Analysts noted that Accenture’s cautious commentary added to existing worries about discretionary technology spending and delayed client decision-making. The company’s outlook is often viewed as an indicator of global demand trends for IT services.

Nifty IT sees sharp decline

The Nifty IT index dropped more than 5%, with all constituent stocks trading in negative territory. TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCLTech were among the major laggards, falling between roughly 3% and 8% during trading.

The weakness in technology shares also weighed on broader market sentiment, ending the momentum seen in recent sessions. Investors turned cautious amid concerns about global growth, technology spending trends and earnings visibility for export-focused IT companies.

Broader market under pressure

Apart from the IT selloff, analysts pointed to profit-booking after the recent rally, weaker global cues and risk aversion among investors as additional factors behind the market decline. Mid-cap and small-cap indices also traded lower, reflecting broader weakness across sectors.
