Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a series of development projects worth Rs 5,700 crore in Bihar’s Siwan district on Friday, reinforcing the Centre’s focus on infrastructure, clean energy, urban housing, and sanitation in the state. This marks his second visit to Bihar in under a month and fifth this year, ahead of the state assembly elections.
During his visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects spanning transport, urban development, sanitation, and renewable energy, with an emphasis on boosting local and regional connectivity as well as quality of life in key towns.
Major railway projects and Vande Bharat boost
One of the key highlights was the inauguration of the Vaishali-Deoria railway line project, built at a cost of over Rs 400 crore. PM Modi also flagged off a new train service on this route, enhancing mobility in the region.
In a notable expansion of semi-high-speed train services, he flagged off the Patliputra-Gorakhpur Vande Bharat Express via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah, offering a faster and modern travel option for North Bihar residents.
Export locomotive flagged off from Marhowra Plant
In a milestone under the ‘Make in India – Make for the World’ vision, PM Modi flagged off the first export locomotive from the Marhowra Plant. Destined for the Republic of Guinea, the locomotive is equipped with high-horsepower engines, advanced AC propulsion systems, regenerative braking, and microprocessor-based controls, marking India’s growing footprint in global rail manufacturing.
Namami Gange projects and water supply initiatives
Furthering efforts under the Namami Gange program, the Prime Minister inaugurated six new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) worth Rs1,800 crore. These STPs aim to enhance sanitation and reduce pollution in key towns along the Ganga.
Additionally, he laid the foundation for new STPs, sanitation, and water supply projects worth over Rs 3,000 crore across several Bihar towns, ensuring safer drinking water and improved hygiene for thousands of households.
Battery energy storage and urban housing rollout
Aiming to improve energy storage capabilities, PM Modi launched a 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to be installed at 15 substations including Siwan, Muzaffarpur, Bettiah, and Motihari. These units, with capacities ranging between 20 MWh and 80 MWh, are expected to strengthen Bihar’s renewable energy efficiency.
In the housing sector, over 53,600 beneficiaries received the first instalment under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U). Keys were also handed over to select beneficiaries of 6,600 newly constructed houses, marking their formal entry into their homes.
