Congress Uttar Pradesh general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her brother Rahul Gandhi are due to visit Hathras district to meet the 19-year-old Dalit rape victim’s family on Thursday.

Congress Uttar Pradesh general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her brother Rahul Gandhi are due to visit Hathras district to meet the 19-year-old Dalit rape victim’s family on Thursday. The Uttar Pradesh Police have been accused of burning the remains of the 19-year-old against the family’s wishes in the dead of the night. She died on Tuesday, some 2 weeks after being gang-raped by four upper caste men in her village on September 14.
Reports said the family had said that UP police cremated her against their wishes and the hurried cremation has provoked nationwide outrage. The police took her body away, drove to her village in Hathras and cremated the body while the family was locked in their home. The woman’s parents had begged to be allowed to take her body back home and perform the last rites the following morning.
The UP Police’s rush to cremate the body is seen as a desperate attempt to cover-up what has been a string of lapses in the case. The police maintained the cremation took place as per the family’s wishes.
The victim’s family accused the police of not taking their complaint seriously at first because they were Dalits. They said the police had only reacted after adequate public outrage.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said all this was a shameful move of the UP government to suppress Dalits and show them their place in society. He said his party’s fight is against this hateful thinking. Priyanka demanded the UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath‘s resignation saying he had no moral right to continue in office.
