The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct an inquiry into the stampede that occurred during actor-turned-politician and TVK chief Vijay’s rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district last month. The tragic incident claimed 41 lives and left over 60 injured.
A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and NV Anjaria also constituted a three-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi to oversee the CBI probe. The panel will include two IPS officers, who may belong to the Tamil Nadu cadre but cannot be natives of the state, the court said.
Court questions handling of case by Madras High Court
The top court expressed concern over how a single judge of the Madras High Court’s Chennai bench had earlier refused a CBI probe and yet took cognisance of the case, terming the incident one that “shook the nation.”
According to officials, nearly 30,000 people had gathered at a venue meant to accommodate around 10,000. The lack of adequate crowd management, food, and water arrangements worsened the situation.
How the tragedy unfolded
The stampede occurred on September 27 when Vijay’s supporters packed into the venue ahead of his arrival. The actor, scheduled to reach by noon, reportedly arrived around 7 pm, by which time the crowd had swelled significantly. His entry reportedly triggered a surge as fans rushed forward to catch a glimpse of him.
As panic spread, several people fainted, and police resorted to a lathi charge to control the situation. Many had also climbed trees, rooftops, and power poles, forcing authorities to cut power supply to prevent electrocution.
Vijay announces compensation, suspends statewide tour
A day after the incident, Vijay announced Rs20 lakh compensation for the families of each victim and Rs2 lakh for those injured. He later suspended his statewide campaign tour and held a video call with the bereaved families on October 7, promising to visit Karur soon.
Following the tragedy, TVK Karur West District Secretary Mathiyazhagan was arrested, while General Secretary Bussy Anand and Joint General Secretary Nirmal Sekar remain absconding.
