Amid the political storm over the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday presented a detailed counter to the allegations levelled by actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Officials defend security and arrangements
At a special press briefing, senior officials including Additional Chief Secretary Amudha, ADGP Davidson Devasirvatham, DGP in-charge Venkataraman, and the Health Secretary, said the state had taken adequate precautions for the rally. They insisted that crowd management and medical facilities were in place and even produced video evidence to support their stance.
Officials clarified that TVK had initially requested smaller venues before the larger Karur ground was approved. While TVK estimated 10,000 participants, the government had anticipated around 20,000. “We deployed more than 1,000 policemen, maintaining a 1:20 ratio against the standard 1:50,” Amudha said, adding that the turnout swelled beyond 25,000 as the evening progressed.
Denial of power cut and lathicharge claims
The government rejected TVK’s claim that a power outage caused panic. Authorities stated there was no disruption from the power grid and that only a generator hired by organisers failed after barricades were broken and a cable was snapped.
On allegations of a lathicharge, officials stressed the police acted with restraint. They recalled that Vijay himself had thanked the force, noting he could not have reached the venue without their assistance.
Ambulances, medical response, and postmortems
The Health Secretary said multiple ambulances were on standby and reached the injured within minutes, transferring them to Karur Medical College Hospital. Emergency protocols were followed, officials asserted.
Responding to criticism over conducting postmortems at night, Amudha clarified it was done at the insistence of families for early release of bodies, allowing last rites the next morning.
Legal fallout and court move
The government maintained that the chaos was triggered when the crowd, far exceeding expectations, breached barricades. “There was no administrative lapse,” officials underlined.
So far, two TVK district secretaries have been arrested. Two other leaders, including senior functionary Bussi Anand, have approached court for anticipatory bail.
Meanwhile, TVK has filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Madras High Court seeking a CBI probe into the tragedy and permission for Vijay to meet the families of the deceased.
