A Delhi court on Monday granted interim bail to the former JNU student Umar Khalid for seven days to attend his sister’s wedding. The relief was granted by Additional Sessions Judge Amitbah Rawat from December 23 to 30, reports said.
Reports further said the judge has instructed Khalid to surrender before the court after the completion of his interim bail and avoid any further extension of bail.
The Delhi Police opposed his bail plea and said the release of the applicant is further opposed as he is very likely to spread misinformation through social media during his interim bail. In response, the Delhi Police further said Khalid may also influence witnesses.
A week ago, Umar Khalid and United Against Hate member Khalid Saifi were discharged in one of the cases related to the Delhi riots. However, both remained in jail as they are also charged under the UAPA in another case related to an alleged conspiracy behind the riots that took place in February, reports stated.
Umar Khalid was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being the mastermind of the riots that took place in North-East Delhi in February 2020.
The riot had killed 53 people and left 700 injured, reports said.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court refused to grant bail to Khalid, activist Khalid Saifi, JNU students, Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, Jamia Coordination Committee members Safoora Zargar, former AAP councillor Tahur Hussain, and several others who were booked under the UAPA.
Violence erupted in North Delhi during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2019.
