In a significant move following its triumph in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided that the newly-elected Chief Minister of Delhi will not take residence at the opulent Sheesh Mahal bungalow in Civil Lines, sources close to the matter confirmed on Saturday. The bungalow had previously served as the official residence for former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The decision to forgo Sheesh Mahal comes after years of controversy surrounding the property. The BJP had previously criticized Kejriwal’s tenure, labeling the bungalow as a symbol of lavish spending, dubbing it “Sheesh Mahal”—a term used to highlight what the party alleged was a massive renovation scam during Kejriwal’s time in office.
BJP makes historic comeback in Delhi
The BJP made a dramatic return to power in Delhi, securing 48 seats in the 70-member assembly, a stunning rise from their previous 2020 tally of just eight seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had swept the 2020 elections with 62 seats, saw its numbers plummet to just 22 seats this time. The Congress party, once a key player in Delhi, failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive election.
While the BJP has yet to formally announce its pick for the new Chief Minister, several names are circulating within party circles. Parvesh Verma, a key figure in the party and the victor of the high-profile battle against Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat, is being touted as a leading contender. Verma, who previously served as a two-time Member of Parliament (MP) for West Delhi, defeated Kejriwal in a constituency the AAP leader had comfortably won for three consecutive terms.
Who will lead Delhi?
Alongside Verma, other potential candidates for the CM post include Satish Upadhyay, who secured a victory in the Malviya Nagar constituency by defeating AAP’s Somnath Bharti, and Ashish Sood, the new MLA from Janakpuri. Jitendra Mahajan, a three-time MLA from Rohtas Nagar, and Vijender Gupta, who has served as the president of the Delhi BJP and represents the Rohini seat, are also among the names being considered for the role.
Speaking after the BJP’s election victory, Verma emphasized that the party leadership would make the final decision on the Chief Minister.
Oath ceremony expected after PM Modi’s US visit
Sources suggest that the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister of Delhi is likely to take place after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his official visit to the United States. Modi is set to travel to Washington on February 12 and 13 for meetings with US officials, marking his first trip to the country since Donald Trump’s inauguration.
As the dust settles on the high-stakes election, all eyes are now on who will lead the capital city into its next chapter under BJP governance, particularly with such a dramatic shift in the political landscape.
