Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta hit back at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi after she accused the newly formed BJP government of its failure to fulfil its election promise of providing a monthly allowance of ₹2,500 to women right from its first Cabinet meeting.
Responding to Atishi’s remarks, Gupta defended her administration during a press briefing, urging her predecessor to refrain from lecturing the new government and to focus on her own past tenure. “This is our government; we will set our own agenda. Let us work without her interference. She has already made her decisions while in power,” Gupta stated.
Gupta further emphasized that both the Congress and AAP had significant tenures in power—15 years for Congress and 13 for the AAP—suggesting they should evaluate their governance rather than question the new administration on its very first day.
“How can they critique us from day one?” she asked. Gupta accused AAP of being unsettled by the BJP’s commitment to its electoral pledges, encouraging both AAP and Congress to concentrate on their own party records. “We will prioritize the rights of Delhi and ensure the city flourishes under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership,” she affirmed.
Moreover, Gupta touched on the issue of corruption, alleging that previous governments, including AAP, have faced various corruption scandals. She hinted that the upcoming CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) report could reveal troubling details about past administrations.
During the inaugural Cabinet meeting, the BJP announced plans to implement the Centre’s flagship Ayushman Bharat health scheme in Delhi, fulfilling another key election promise. Gupta also stated her government plans to present 14 CAG reports that evaluate the performance of the former AAP-led government, which she claimed were previously blocked.
In her nearly three-minute video, Atishi lamented the BJP’s breach of promises from the outset, criticizing Gupta for disappointing women voters. She highlighted a placard held by women in her video, reading, “Women of Delhi are waiting” for the promised allowance. Gupta responded by assuring that the first instalment would be credited to women’s accounts by March 8, demonstrating her commitment to fulfilling the BJP’s manifesto pledges.
