In a major setback for Mahua Moitra, the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee adopted the 500-page report on cash-for-query allegations against the Trinamool MP, recommending her expulsion from the lower house of the Parliament with the support of six members. The ethics panel chief said that the six members of the committee supported the report, while four others opposed it.

Aparajita Sarangi, Rajdeep Roy, Sumedhanand Saraswati, Preneet Kaur, Vinod Sonkar, and Hemant Godse supported the adoption of the report. Danish Ali, V Vaithilingam, PR Natarajan, Giridhari Yadav opposed it.

The ethics committee led by BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar, had earlier heard Mahua Moitra, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey who lodged the complaint against her and advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai. Reportedly, the draft report had recommended the disqualification of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra from Lok Sabha owing to the ongoing probe in the alleged bribe-for-query case.

After the report was adopted, JD(U) MP Giridhari Yadav, who is a member of the panel, claimed that there was no discussion on the report among the members. Mentioning that the committee has only cross-questioned, the JD(U) MP said that they should have held a meeting with the members of the panel to discuss. Giridhari Yadav said that this is a gross violation of the rules.

In October, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey alleged that bribes were exchanged between Mahua Moitra and businessman Darshan Hiranandani to ask questions in Parliament in exchange for cash and gifts. Nishikant Dubey had also cited advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai’s letter which mentioned irrefutable evidence of the alleged exchange between Moitra and Hiranandani.

Nonetheless, Mahua Moitra has denied all the allegations and sent a legal notice to BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and Jai Anant Dehadrai stating the charges that she accepted any benefit of any kind to perform her duties as a Member of Lok Sabha were defamatory, false, baseless, and not supported by even a shred of evidence.

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath added more suspense to the rumours of his switching allegiance to the BJP from the Congress as he neither denied nor accepted what has been the hot rumour doing the buzz in the capital.

Speaking to reporters, Nath asked the media to lower their excitement over speculation of him and his son Nakul Kamal Nath joining the BJP and said he is not denying it and will inform them of the the news if there is something in the coming days.

The father-son duo arrived in Delhi today reportedly to meet the top leaders of the BJP. Responding to the speculation, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said that he spoke to Nath last night and wondered how the party could expect the man, who started his political career with the Nehru-Gandhi family, to leave the Gandhi family.

Regarding the speculation, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari reminded what former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had said about Kamal Nath, rejecting the rumours, he said when Nath fought elections for the first time, Indira called Nath her third son.

Asserting that, Patwari said Nath has been with the Congress for the last 45 years and 7 years as the Madhya Pradesh Congress chief.  He also remembered when former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia toppled the Congress government in MP, party workers stood with Nath.

He told the media not to expect such a thing that Nath would leave the Congress and join the BJP.

The speculation came just days after Ashok Chavan, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, joined the BJP, becoming the latest Congress leader to exit the party.

Earlier on February 12, Chavan joined the BJP a day after quitting the Congress. Chavan was associated with the Congress for four decades, and resigned from all party posts and as the MLA from Bhokar constituency.

Earlier in January, Milind Deora also ended his family’s 55-year-old relationship with the Congress and joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
