Nitish kumar with Narendra Modi

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has denied a Rajya Sabha ticket to his party colleague and Union steel minister RCP Singh. The move is being seen as a sign that Kumar is upset with his ally BJP in Bihar.

With this move, Kumar has signaled that for now, he will have no one from his Janata Dal United (JDU) in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet.

If Singh is not given an extension for 6 months or Nitish’s new Rajya Sabha nominee does not take Singh’s place in the Union cabinet, it will mean that the JDU has chosen to quit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ministry.

The Bihar allies- BJP and JDU- have been bickering with each other and Kumar has been drifting close to the Opposition RJD.

The denial of ticket leaves steel minister Singh with little option but to resign. He can continue for 6 more months if the Prime Minister wants him to, risking a break-up with Nitish.

Singh is the only JDU minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet. He apparently paid for his proximity to the BJP and may have to step down soon as his Rajya Sabha term will end in June.

Singh said he was grateful at being denied a Rajya Sabha seat. Whatever he decided is in his interest and have not done anything to date that should make anyone upset, he said.

Nitish Kunar has given the Rajya Sabha ticket to JDU Jharkhand unit president Khiru Mahto, who belongs to the same Kurmi caste as Singh.

Five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar will see voting on June 10 with RJD’s Misa Bharti, BJP leaders Satish Chand Dubey and Gopal Narayan Singh, and JD(U)’s Ram Chandra Prasad retiring in July.

The RJD has already announced Lalu Yadav’s daughter Misa Bharti and Dr Faiyaz Ahmad Bisfi as its candidates.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to West Bengal for election campaigning has been cancelled after the party failed to secure the required administrative permission for public events.

The visit, planned for April 23, was called off after the party waited until the evening for clearance but did not receive approval in time to make necessary arrangements.

Congress leaders have alleged that the local administration, under the influence of the ruling Trinamool Congress, did not grant permission for the rally. The party claimed that despite waiting until around 6 pm, the approval did not come through, forcing them to cancel the programme.

Trinamool response

The Trinamool Congress rejected the allegations, stating that all political parties must follow established procedures for holding public meetings. A party minister said applications must be submitted through the designated system within a specified time frame before events.

The Trinamool also indicated that the state government is currently in a caretaker role during the election period, suggesting that questions regarding permissions fall under the purview of the Election Commission.

Fresh dates likely

Congress sources said the party is still keen for Rahul Gandhi to campaign in the state and may seek fresh permission for a visit on April 25 or 26.

Political context

The development comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, where multiple parties are campaigning aggressively. The Congress and Trinamool Congress, despite being part of broader opposition alignments at the national level, remain direct rivals in the state.

Recent reports also indicate that permission-related issues have affected campaign events in the state, with some rallies being cancelled due to lack of police clearance.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge faces criticism after controversial remark on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, says statement was misinterpreted

A political controversy erupted after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist” during a public address, triggering sharp reactions from the ruling party.

Following the backlash, Kharge issued a clarification, stating that his remarks were misinterpreted and that he did not intend to label the Prime Minister as a terrorist. He instead accused Modi of using threatening language in political discourse.

The comment quickly drew strong criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with leaders calling the remark inappropriate and accusing the Congress of lowering political discourse. The exchange reflects heightened tensions between the ruling party and the opposition amid the ongoing election season.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also condemned the remark, describing it as “atrocious” and indicative of a new low in political rhetoric.

The incident has further intensified the war of words between the two parties, with both sides trading accusations as campaigning gains momentum.

Campaign activities continue on ground while engagement with I-PAC leadership reportedly declines after recent developments

Amid ongoing assembly election campaigns, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) are recalibrating their poll strategies as political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee comes under scrutiny.

According to media reports, campaign activities at the ground level remain largely unaffected in both states. Party workers continue voter outreach, rallies, and booth-level coordination without any visible slowdown.

However, there has been a noticeable reduction in engagement with I-PAC’s senior leadership following recent developments, including investigative actions involving the firm.

Sources indicate that while the broader campaign machinery remains intact, both TMC and DMK are making internal adjustments to ensure continuity and minimise dependence on external strategists. This includes greater reliance on party cadres and local leadership for campaign execution.

The developments come at a crucial time, with elections underway and political parties aiming to maintain momentum. Despite the situation surrounding I-PAC, both parties appear focused on sustaining their outreach efforts and adapting strategies as needed.
