The BJP on Sunday distanced itself from party spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s remarks against Prophet Mohammed saying the party is strongly against the insults or demeans of any sect or religion. The party, however, made no direct mention of any incident or comment.
Amid a row over remarks of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, the BJP said that it respects all religions and is strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy, the party said.
In a statement, the BJP said India’s Constitution gives the right to every citizen to practise any religion of his/her choice and to honour and respect every religion. As India celebrates the 75th year of its Independence, the party is committed to making India a great country where all are equal and everyone lives with dignity, where all are committed to India’s unity and integrity, where all enjoy the fruits of growth and development, the party said.
The BJP has finally opened up about the ongoing controversy a week after Nupur Sharma’s controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammed during a TV debate on Gyanvapi issue. The party’s clarification came on a day when the Arab nation’s warning to boycott Indian products. A hashtag Stopinsulting_ProphetMuhammad was also trending on twitter.
Nupur Sharma’s insulting remarks against Prophet Mohammad had triggered a huge outcry and protests across the country.
Following which, a clash were broke out in parts of Kanpur after Friday prayers. At least 40 people, including 20 police personnel, were injured when the members of two groups have started throwing stones at each other over a call to shut down markets in protest against BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s insulting remarks against Prophet Mohammed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and UP Chief Minister were also present in the state on the day when clashes were broke out.
Working on a complaint by Irfan Shaikh, joint secretary of the Mumbai wing of Raza Academy, the Mumbai police registered an FIR against Nupur Sharma. In his complaint, he mentioned that Sharma allegedly made abusive comments about the Prophet during a TV news debate on the Gyanvapi issue.
While Sharma has not been taking back her words that he had uttered during in the TV debate and said she did not anything abusive or wrong. She also claimed that she has been getting death and rape threats since the controversy broke out.
Sharma was charged under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), Section 504 (intentional insult with an intent to provoke breach of peace), 505(2) (provoke enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
