Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the government for continuing with work on the ambitious Central Vista project at the time when the country is facing deadly second wave of Covid which has taken away thousands of lives and crushed the healthcare system.
As the country reels under a severe health crisis, with its health system under pressure amid a rising number of Covid cases, the work on the Modi government’s Central Vista project has been permitted to continue as an essential service.
From the last ten days, Delhi has been under lockdown, with its health system collapsing amid worsening second wave of Coronavirus and has reported 20,201 fresh cases and 380 deaths on Tuesday.
Amidst this devastation, one project remains unaffected that is the Modi government’s Central Vista project.
What Rahul Gandhi has tweeted?
Rahul Gandhi tweeted that Central Vista- not essential. Central Government with a vision- essential. The Central Vista project is not essential now, but a Central government with a vision is, Gandhi said on April 28 as the country saw a record single-day rise of over 3.60 lakh coronavirus cases.
What Rahul Gandhi had tweeted earlier on government’s handling of Covid crisis?
Gandhi, who is in home isolation, has repeatedly criticised the government’s handling of the pandemic. On Sunday, he asked the ruling BJP not to turn India into a victim of its system in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. He has squarely blamed the Centre for the crisis of oxygen and medicine shortage.
In another tweet, Gandhi asked people to continue helping each other and expose the reality of the blind system.
The Wayanad had cancelled all his election rallies in West Bengal citing the Covid spiral and had urged others to do the same.
Why the opposition is criticizing Central Vista Project?
The Congress has been opposing Central Vista calling it an issue of misplaced priorities at a time when India is battling a pandemic and economic recession. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly urged the Centre to spend money on vaccines, oxygen and other health services instead of unnecessary projects.
The RJD’s Manoj Jha has said this must be stopped. It is not correct that this vanity project carries on.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien told the reporters that the opposition wanted to use the Central Vista Project money to vaccinate more people. The money could have bought more PPE kits, given direct transfers to migrant workers.
What is the Covid situation in India?
The second wave of the coronavirus has put huge pressure on the Indian public health system, with hospitals in several states reeling under a shortage of medical oxygen, beds, medicines and other medical equipment.
