After the T20 series victory against South Africa by 2-1, Team India is all set to cross swords with South Africa in the three match ODI series. But seems like cricket fans will have to witness the magic as the unexpected rain in Lucknow has delayed the match.

The first ODI match will be played in Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, commonly known as Ekana Cricket Stadium, on Thursday. However, the match was slated to begin at 12:00 pm but the latest update suggests, that after a short inspection, toss will be held at 1:30 pm and match will begin at 2:00 pm.

Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice captain of India, while Shikhar Dhawan will be leading Men In Blue for the ODI series against Proteas as the senior team has left for Australia. After defeating Australia and South Africa in T20 series but 2-1, senior Team India along with skipper Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli has left for Australia where the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 will be played.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are facing a potentially devastating blow ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Venkatesh Iyer, the star all-rounder who commanded a staggering ₹23.75 crore at the recent mega-auction, has suffered a serious injury during a Ranji Trophy match. The incident occurred while playing for Madhya Pradesh against Kerala at the Greenfield Stadium.

While batting at number six, Iyer twisted his right ankle, bringing a premature end to his innings after just three balls faced. The injury appeared severe, forcing him to immediately retire hurt. Eyewitnesses described Iyer collapsing on the pitch in pain, requiring immediate attention from the team physio.

He subsequently left the field with the physio’s support, a stark image that sent ripples of concern through the KKR fanbase. Later, he was seen in the dugout, wearing a single pad and resting his injured leg, further emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

The timing of the injury couldn’t be worse. Iyer was instrumental in KKR’s IPL 2024 title victory, delivering a stellar performance with 370 runs in 15 matches (13 innings). His impressive average of 46.25 and a remarkable strike rate of 158.79, punctuated by four fifties, solidified his position as a key player within the team.

His absence in the upcoming season would be a significant blow to KKR’s campaign, potentially disrupting their carefully crafted strategies and team dynamics. The acquisition of Iyer himself was a high-stakes gamble.

Released by KKR after the 2024 season, he was unexpectedly snapped up in a fierce bidding war against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The ₹23.75 crore investment underscores the franchise’s belief in his abilities and their willingness to go to extreme lengths to secure his services.

Now, the team finds itself nervously awaiting a prognosis on his injury, hoping for a speedy recovery that would allow this prized asset to return to the field. The extent of the injury and the subsequent recovery timeline remain uncertain, leaving KKR fans and management alike in a state of anxious anticipation.

Shami’s fitness under scrutiny after omission from first T20I against England

Mohammed Shami practices bowling at the nets, with knee heavily strapped.

Mohammed Shami’s anticipated return to international cricket has been further postponed as he was notably absent from India’s lineup for the first T20I against England. This decision has intensified discussions around the fast bowler’s fitness levels.

Despite showing signs of recovery and actively participating in pre-match training sessions, the 34-year-old pacer’s exclusion by skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who chose the playing XI after winning the toss, has raised eyebrows. Shami, observed bowling intensely at the nets while targeting a two-stump line, also had his left knee heavily strapped, a detail that did not go unnoticed during his practice.

The veteran pacer, who has been sidelined for over a year, recently shared his journey of recovery and his determination to return to the field. At a recent Cricket Association of Bengal event, Shami expressed his relentless desire to play for the country and mentioned his active participation in domestic cricket across all formats to regain his form.

Despite this, concerns about his knee swelling post-training sessions linger. Suryakumar Yadav had previously shown confidence in Shami’s recovery, hinting at his inclusion and emphasizing the bowler’s experience as a valuable asset to the team.

However, on the eve of the match, despite Shami’s rigorous training and a subsequent session where he bowled with full intensity, he appeared cautious while walking back to the dressing room, hinting at persistent unease.

This ongoing saga not only affects Shami’s immediate future in the Indian squad but also puts a spotlight on the team’s preparations for the upcoming Champions Trophy, particularly with uncertainty surrounding another key pacer, Jasprit Bumrah.

As the selectors, including Chairman Ajit Agarkar, deliberate on the team’s composition, the emphasis on Shami’s readiness highlights the challenges of managing athlete fitness at the highest levels of cricket. Agarkar has remarked on the strategic importance of reintroducing Shami through shorter formats as a buildup to more intense international engagements.

As the series progresses, all eyes will remain on Shami’s recovery trajectory and his potential impact on the team’s dynamic, especially in the white-ball setup.
