ICICI-Videocon loan fraud case: Bombay High Court grants bail to Chanda Kochhar, husband Deepak Kochhar
The court stated that their arrest was not in conformity with provisions of law and this warrants their release.

The Bombay High Court on Monday granted bail to former managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar in an alleged ICICI Bank-Videocon loan fraud case.
The court ruled that their arrest was not in accordance with the law and that they should be released. The couple was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on December 23 in an alleged money laundering case involving Videocon Group promoter Venugopal Dhoot.
The couple had sought temporary bail to attend their son’s wedding, which is to be held on January 15. They referred to the CBI’s arrest as illegal in their bail petition and argued that no sanction had been obtained, as needed under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Advocate Kushal Mor, representing the Kochhars’ said the former ICICI Bank CEO was arrested after a perfunctory interrogation and that a female officer was not present at the time of her arrest, as is mandated by law.

According to the CBI, after Chanda Kochhar took over as MD and CEO, the bank sanctioned rupee term loans (RTL) worth Rs 1,875 crores to six companies of the Videocon Group between June 2009 and October 2011. As a quid pro quo, Videocon invested in her husband Deepak’s company, NuPower Renewable.
During the initial investigation, it was found that between June 2009 and October 2011, six loans totaling Rs 1,875 crore were approved for the Videocon Group and businesses affiliated with it, allegedly in violation of ICICI Bank’s established norms.
The reports state the loan was waived off on September 7, 2009, and, the next day, Videocon Group – via its firm, Supreme Energy Private Limited, transferred Rs 64 crore to NuPower Renewables Limited.

India became Hindu Rashtra after partition, says BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya | WATCH

BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, Tuesday, courted controversy with his remarks saying that India became a “Hindu Rashtra” or Hindu nation after the country’s partition which he said was done along religious lines and led to the formation of Pakistan in 1947.
Speaking to reporters in Indore, Vijayvargiya said that India was partitioned on religious lines after the independence, Pakistan was formed and what remained of the country is a ‘Hindu Rashtra.’
The senior BJP leader claimed that he has a Muslim friend from Bhopal who visits a Shiva temple everyday and also recites Hanuman Chalisa. He claimed that his Muslim friend was inspired to worship Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva after knowing about the history of his family as his ancestors were Rajputs of Rajasthan.
He said some of his friend’s relatives are still Hindu Rajputs living in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. However, Vijayvargiya did not reveal his mystery Muslim friend’s identity.
The saffron party leader claimed like his Muslim friend, there are many such people who feel their ancestors once recited the Hanuman Chalisa and he was mulling to form a “Hanuman Chalisa Club” to wean youths away from drugs.
Vijayvargiya also commented on the recent surge in separatist activities in Punjab, saying that Centre and the state government were working together to deal with the problem and their efforts will yield good results.
The senior politician who is also a former state cabinet minister is not new to controversies. In June last year, Kailash Vijayvargiya was criticized for his remarks on Agniveers.
The BJP leader reportedly said that he would give priority to Agnipath recruits for security jobs at his BJP office but retracted his comments later by issuing a clarification later, saying he only meant that the excellence of Agniveers will be utilised in whichever field they choose after completing service in the defence forces.
