Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Johannesburg for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, met Indian origin tech entrepreneurs and members of the Indian community in South Africa, encouraging them to strengthen their participation in India’s growth story.
Modi highlights expanding role of diaspora tech innovators
Modi described his interaction with tech entrepreneurs as “fruitful”, noting that they discussed ongoing work in sectors including fintech, social media, agriculture, education, healthcare and medical devices. He called upon them to enhance collaboration with India and contribute to technological progress.
He also met Indian community members who are active in various local organisations. The prime minister appreciated their efforts in boosting cultural ties and acknowledged the diaspora’s contribution as a “living bridge” between India and South Africa.
Modi urged the community to continue promoting practices such as Yoga and Ayurveda and spoke about their role in strengthening people-to-people ties.
According to the foreign ministry, Modi highlighted the contribution of South Africa’s 1.7-million-strong Indian diaspora in nurturing historical bonds between the two nations. He also lauded initiatives that help young people connect with the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
PM receives ‘Kalash’ containing Shree Anna
The prime minister received a ‘Kalash’ from the Chinmaya Mission, containing Shree Anna (millets) sourced from both India and South Africa. He said the Kalash will be placed at the Annapoorna Devi Temple in Durban.
Modi also met the winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye quiz in South Africa, praising the competition for encouraging young diaspora members to explore India’s heritage.
Bilateral talks with Australia, business discussions with Naspers
On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Modi held a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to review cooperation in defence, critical minerals, trade, investment and cultural ties.
He also met the CEO and chairman of Naspers to discuss expanding investments in India’s growing digital ecosystem.
Earlier in the day, Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome on arrival at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Gauteng. This year’s G20 Summit is the first to be hosted on the African continent, with the African Union having joined the G20 during India’s presidency in 2023.
