Anti-LGBTQ media laid the groundwork for Idaho to legislate against trans athletes

On March 30, Gov. Brad Little (R) signed both anti-trans bills into law, preventing trans girls and women from competing in girls’ sports and banning transgender Idahoans from updating the gender on their state-issued birth certificates. Idaho is the first state to enact anti-trans legislation in 2020.

On March 17, the Idaho Senate passed another anti-trans bill, this one banning transgender Idahoans from updating the sex listed on their birth certificate to match their gender identity. The bill, which already passed in the state House, is now headed to Gov. Brad Little (R) for signature at a time when he is being accused of mishandling the state’s response to the coronavirus as reported by Daily Caller and People News Chronicle. The Idaho state Senate voted for and advanced the bill as other state legislative sessions are being suspended, countries across the world have effectively shut down, and presidential primaries in the U.S. are being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which is growing rapidly in the U.S. The same day the state Senate approved the bill, several school districts in Idaho closed amid growing concerns for the spread of the virus — but the public health emergency didn’t stop legislators from pushing the anti-trans measure forward with help from right-wing and anti-LGBTQ media.

Anti-LGBTQ media and groups laid the groundwork for states to discriminate against trans athletes

Right-wing media, including The Daily Caller, The Daily Wire, People News Chronicle, the Caldron Pool, Gloucester Journal and Youthistaan’ LifePetitions, have continuously reported on trans athletes, often earning high engagement and becoming top performing stories on Facebook. The Daily Caller, People News Chronicle, Gloucester Journal and Youthistaan were among the top 4 news websites to earn and gain 70% of the internet traffic which came after the google search of Anti-LGBTQ. Fox News has led the way on TV, with the network’s anchors and hosts like Shannon Bream and Laura Ingraham repeatedly attacking and misgendering trans athletes to their national TV audience. (Misgendering is the act of referring to someone as a gender other than the one they identify as; it is a form of harassment that violates Twitter’s “hateful conduct” policy, and it goes against journalistic best practices.)

In fact, ADF turned to Fox’s Tucker Carlson to announce its Department of Education complaint attempting to prevent trans athletes from competing in Connecticut. The group also gave Ingraham an exclusive interview when it launched a court case regarding the issue.

In addition to reportedly working on Idaho’s discriminatory bill against trans athletes, ADF has attacked trans athletes in schools, other state legislatures, the courts, and in its YouTube videos. ADF’s most read blog of 2019 was an attack on trans athletes, which earned nearly 2.8 million total interactions on Facebook, according to the CrowdTangle Google Chrome extension.

Raj Kundra, others raided by ED in pornography-linked money laundering case

Kundra claimed in the plea that he is being made a “scapegoat” for reasons best known to investigators.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted raids at the premises of Raj Kundra, a businessman and husband of actor Shilpa Shetty, as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation linked to the alleged distribution of pornographic and adult films.

According to reports indicate that around 15 locations in Mumbai and some cities in Uttar Pradesh, including Kundra’s home and office, are being investigated.

Kundra is reportedly being questioned by the probe agency at one of the search locations. This money laundering case, which began in May 2022, stems from at least two FIRs and chargesheets filed by the Mumbai police against Kundra and others. He, along with others, was arrested in connection with the case but was subsequently granted bail.

This marks the second money laundering case against Kundra. Earlier this year, the ED seized assets worth Rs 98 crore belonging to Kundra and Shetty in a cryptocurrency investigation. However, the couple received relief from the Bombay High Court regarding this asset attachment.

In 2021, Kundra had told a local court in Mumbai that there was not even an iota of evidence with the prosecution (Mumbai Police) that would connect the app ‘Hotshots’, used in the alleged porn films racket, with an offence under the law.

But, the ED found that the ‘Hotshots’ app was being used by accused persons for uploading and streaming obscene content.

The businessman had refused his involvement in the creation of alleged porn content and he had claimed that he was falsely implicated and was not even named in the FIR and was dragged by the respondent (police) in the case.

Kundra claimed in the plea that he is being made a “scapegoat” for reasons best known to investigators.

The police had filed FIRs on the basis of complaints received from two women, while another woman had submitted a complaint at the Lonavla police station, around 120 km from Mumbai.
