External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and his Pakistan counterpart Khawaja Asif may meet next week on the sidelines of the annual world body meet in New York.
Reportedly, Swaraj and Asif are “expected to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit and the SAARC group meetings.” India is expected to raise several issues including UN reforms, counter-terrorism cooperation, migration, climate change and peacekeeping.
MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told ANI, “The highlight of her visit is known to everyone – her speech at the U.N. Assembly will be in the morning of September 23. We have arranged many bilateral meetings, regional meetings and trilateral meetings. As far as I know, there will be at least 15-20 bilateral meetings.”
Apart from this, EAM will participate in several trilateral and the regional meetings including G77, G4 and BRICS member countries.
However, stating that he is unsure about any bilateral with Pakistan, Kumar said, “But like I have told if in the regional meetings the Pakistan Foreign Minister is present, then in this context, it can happen, but I have no knowledge of the bilateral meeting.”
Meanwhile, India’s permanent representative at UN Syed Akbaruddin took a fresh dig at Pakistan on the ongoing unrest in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that Islamabad would be wasting its time if it attempts to discuss the Kashmir issue at next week’s UN General Assembly (UNGA) Session.
Syed Akbaruddin, while describing India’s priorities, said that India won’t sit still till Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Masood Azhar is designated as a top terrorist by the UN. He said, “If I were to use a term, the matter is what we would call in judicial terms sub-judice. Currently the matter is with a UN committee. We hope that the committee will be able to fulfil its role in designating Masood Azhar who we have tried for quite some time but have not succeeded yet.”
Apart from accusing Azhhar as the mastermind of the Pathankot Air Force base attack, India blames his brother Rauf and five others for carrying out one of the most deadly attack on Indian soil. Seven Indian Army jawans were martyred while six infiltrating terrorists were killed.
Earlier in August, China had created hurdles to the proposal presented by United States, France and the United Kingdom to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.
However assuring that the UN will mark Azhar as a designated global terrorist, Akbaruddin stated, “He (Azhar) may try to delay this, but the inevitable will happen. So be certain about it. The clock is ticking for him. He will be pursued until justice is met.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
