The Indian women are scripting history nowadays as they are making the country proud in each and every field whether it’s sports, business, entertainment, defense forces and so on but people generally overlook the fact that they have faced a lot of problems to write their success stories. On the other hand, it is also true that there are still a number of females in the country who are facing discrimination and are deprived of opportunities just because they are women as many perceive women to be the weaker gender in comparison to men.    

There is no denying that the situation of women in the Indian society has improved to a large extent but we cannot deny the essential fact that a lot is still remaining to be done. There are some people who are working constantly towards attaining the aim of women empowerment and Raunak Singh is one of them. 

Yes, we are talking about the young humanitarian Raunak Singh from Cuttack, Odisha, who has been awarded with the Corona Warrior Award 2021 by Times Applaud, the leading Global Press Release Distribution Network, for his outstanding social work during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during the first wave of COVID-19 that Raunak Singh founded his NGO Sikh Aid on the principles of Sikh’s teachings, “Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, Vandh Chakho” and in the present scenario, the organization operates all over India.

While Raunak Singh and Sikh Aid have been carrying out many projects in various states for helping the downtrodden and needy, women empowerment is among their top priorities. He and his NGO are providing free education to girls, especially in the rural areas because the education facilities are limited in such regions. One more reason for it is that sadly many parents still believe there is no use of providing education to girls as they are suitable for handling kitchen and household chores only. Raunak Singh and his team talked to parents, raised awareness regarding the importance of education and tried to make them understand why they should educate their girl child also along with their son. It was certainly not easy but their efforts are paying off now as many parents have started sending their daughters for studying at the education centers. Raunak Singh feels that education is quite necessary for every kid, whether boy or girl, and education will enable girls in becoming self-reliant and successful.

One of the biggest problems that the women from rural areas face is lack of proper sanitation and hygiene facilities because of which they are not able to manage their menstruation hygiene in a proper manner. Raunak Singh and his NGO helped people in making toilets in their homes so that the women of the house don’t need to go out for sanitation purposes, it not only helps in taking care of their health but it has also brought down the number of crimes committed against women. The poor women of remote and village areas can’t afford to buy sanitary pads because of financial problems and they are also not much aware of the fact that the cloth which they use instead of sanitary pads makes them sick and sometimes it can be life-taking as well. The biggest problem with the Indians whether from rural areas or from urban areas is that they don’t even want to talk on this issue and it’s still considered as a taboo. Raunak Singh and his team are not only making women aware of the importance of menstruation hygiene management (MHM) but they are also distributing free sanitary pads among those women who are not in a position to buy them. On an average, every month Sikh Aid distributes 6000-7000 sanitary pads which is certainly an admirable move.

Other than this, Raunak Singh and his NGO are feeding thousands of people daily free of cost and is ensuring that no stone is left unturned in providing help to any needy person who comes to them.

Raunak Singh and his team are making huge efforts for the cause of women empowerment so let us not just praise them but also support them as per our capacity.
