India has congratulated the Maldivian leader Irbahim Mohamed Solih on his victory in the presidential election and welcomed the successful completion of the election process in the island nation.
According to a Ministry of External Affairs’ press release issued on Monday, “This election marks not only the triumph of democratic forces in the Maldives, but also reflects the firm commitment to the values of democracy and the rule of law”.
The statement further said, “In keeping with our ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy, India looks forward to working closely with the Maldives in further deepening our partnership”.
Meanwhile, Maldives outgoing President Abdulla Yameen has conceded defeat to his opposition rival, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, also known as Ibu. While speaking on television on Monday, Yameen said, “The citizens of the Maldives had their say… and I accept the result.”
The 59-year old outgoing president, who presided over a five year crackdown on dissent, said that he met with the president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at the President’s office shortly before his speech. “I have congratulated him,” Yameen added.
Reacting to the result, Yameen said that he has “served the Maldivian public sincerely” to ensure economic prosperity for the country. “The result of that service is clear, and I thank the thousands who accepted that and voted for me,” he said.

President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is a long time member of parliament and is representing a coalition of four parties, whose leaders are either in jail or exile.
According to the official count, Solih won with 58 percent of the vote, or 134,616 ballots, while Yameen received 96,142 votes or 42 percent. More than 89 percent voters used their voting right.
According to Maldives Independent, the Elections Commission says the opposition candidate got 38,484 more votes than Yameen. The Commission’s chief Ahmed Shareef said there were no complaints or irregularities that could affect the outcome.

According to Maldives election rules, the official result must be announced within seven days allowing completion of verification process once all ballot boxes are received at the EC headquarters.
The Male based newspaper reports that the voting was smooth but slow when polls opened on Sunday morning. There were about 262,000 eligible voters and 472 ballot boxes, including five in four overseas locations.
This was the third multi-party presidential election in the island nation.
