Canadians unhappy over PM Trudeau cold-shoulder India visit

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The eight-day long state visit of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to India has gone through rough weather while Canadians consider that New Delhi is snubbing him over his perceived support to Sikh separatists.

Trudeau was received by MoS Agriculture-Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Saturday. He visited Taj Mahal in Agra and Wildlife sanctuary in Mathura on Sunday. On Monday, Canadian leader visited Gandhinagar and will head to Mumbai in the evening, from where he will fly to Amritsar.

On Thursday, Trudeau will return to the capital and will meet President, Prime Minister and Minister of External Affairs on Friday. He will return to his home country on Saturday.

According to Canadians, their PM’s visit to India could not create a ripple because New Delhi is very openly snubbing him over his perceived support for Sikh separatists in his country.

For one, PM Narendra Modi did not go to the airport to receive the Canadian head of state. Candice Malcolm, a columnist for the Canadian publication Toronto Sun has pointed out the stark contrast between how other heads of state have been received in India versus how Trudeau has not.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As if that wasn’t bad enough, whom did the Centre send to the airport to receive Trudeau? Junior agriculture minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who is, as one Canadian put it, like a (mere) “parliamentary secretary in Canada”.

Then, Trudeau, his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, and their brood of three visited the Taj Mahal on Sunday while Uttar Pradesh chief  minister  Adityanath was nowhere in sight. Just a month ago UP CM Adityanath Yogi escorted  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu  during Taj visit. However, the Canadian PM was received at Agra by district level officials.

Many say that the Centre’s absence of pomp and ceremony is an indication of its displeasure with Trudeau for appointing Cabinet ministers with links allegedly to the Sikh separatist movement.

Trudeau has four Sikh cabinet ministers – Harjit Sajjan, Amarjeet Sohi, Navdeep Bains and Bardish Chagger. Sohi said earlier this month that he’s neither sympathetic to nor against the Khalistan movement.

“If there is a small segment of people in Canada who talk about separation, who talk about the creation of Khalistan if they do that in a peaceful way that is their right to do so but this is not an issue that I hear in the community,” said Amarjit Sohi, one of the Canadian Ministers of Indian origin.

Canadian columnist Malcolm did not take kindly to this statement. She wondered whether newcomers to Canada were “entitled” to support foreign extremist organizations.

However, Malcolm believes Trudeau must denounce Khalistani extremists publicly, while in India, and should apologize to Amarinder. Another Canadian opposition leader, Jagmeet Singh, must also “denounce Khalistani radicals”, she added.

Till now, Canadian PM’s meeting with Punjab CM Amrinder Singh was not on card when he visits Amritsar later this week. However, Amrinder Singh has denied meeting with some ministers because they “have negative views regarding Punjab.”

On February 8, Indian born Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan called Outlook magazine’s accusations as “ridiculous” and “offensive” that Canada was complicit in rising the Sikh extremism in that country.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Nagpur violence: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis vows to recover damage cost from rioters, warns of bulldozer action

He also dismissed any political angle or foreign involvement in the violence, stating, “No foreign hand or Bangladeshi link has surfaced. There is no political angle to the violence.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday announced that the cost of public property damaged during the recent violence in Nagpur will be recovered from the rioters. He warned that if the perpetrators fail to pay, their assets will be seized, and bulldozers will be used wherever necessary.

“Whatever damage has occurred will be recovered from the rioters. If they do not pay, their property will be sold to cover the costs. Wherever required, bulldozers will also be used,” Fadnavis stated.

The violence erupted in central Nagpur on March 17 following rumours that a “chadar” (cloth) with holy inscriptions was burnt during protests organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The protests were demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The clashes resulted in injuries to several police personnel, including three deputy commissioners of police (DCPs), and extensive damage to vehicles and homes. A 40-year-old man succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment on Saturday.

Fadnavis revealed that 104 individuals have been arrested so far based on CCTV footage, with more arrests expected. “Police action will be taken against those involved in the riots or aiding the rioters. Those spreading rumors on social media will also be made co-accused. So far, 68 social media posts have been identified and deleted,” he said.

The Chief Minister also addressed reports of female constables being molested during the violence, clarifying that such claims were untrue. “Stones were hurled at female police constables, but reports of molestation are false,” Fadnavis stated, according to PTI.

While acknowledging that intelligence gathering could have been better, Fadnavis denied that the incident was an “intelligence failure.” He also dismissed any political angle or foreign involvement in the violence, stating, “No foreign hand or Bangladeshi link has surfaced. There is no political angle to the violence.”

Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal has found himself at the center of a social media storm after being spotted wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “be your own sugar daddy” during his divorce hearing with estranged wife Dhanashree Verma.

The phrase, often associated with financial independence laced in internet slang, was seen by many as an ill-timed and provocative choice, particularly given the sensitive context of the legal proceedings.

The final hearing in the couple’s divorce case brought an end to months of public speculation and trolling, especially directed at Dhanashree Verma over alleged alimony demands. While earlier rumours claimed she sought Rs 60 crore in settlement, Chahal was eventually ordered to pay Rs 4.75 crore in alimony.

Online reaction to the T-shirt

Social media users were quick to notice Chahal’s outfit choice, with many calling it immature and a public dig at his former partner. The phrase “be your own sugar daddy” is often used online to promote financial self-reliance but can also carry sarcastic or cheeky undertones, especially when worn during a public legal matter.

Critics argued that Chahal’s attire at a divorce hearing seemed inappropriate and insensitive, especially as Dhanashree has been repeatedly subjected to online trolling over the financial aspects of their separation. While Chahal did not comment on the T-shirt or the reaction to it, the moment has gone viral, triggering debates about personal conduct in public legal proceedings and the responsibility of public figures during sensitive personal events.

The controversy also comes at a time when celebrity divorces and their legal details often play out in the public eye, blurring the line between privacy and public perception.
