The Congress on Saturday dismissed the outcome of the Delhi Assembly elections as a validation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies, instead calling it a referendum on Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Despite facing a third consecutive electoral whitewash in the national capital, the Congress vowed to stage a strong comeback and form a government in Delhi by 2030.
The BJP is set to make a triumphant return to power in Delhi after more than 26 years, decisively ending AAP’s reign in the city. The Congress, however, failed to secure a single seat, repeating its dismal performance from the 2015 and 2020 elections.
Congress General Secretary In Charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, asserted that the election results were less about the Prime Minister’s popularity and more about the voters’ rejection of Kejriwal’s leadership.
“At the peak of Prime Minister Modi’s popularity in 2015 and 2020, AAP had secured decisive victories in Delhi. This clearly indicates that the current verdict is not an endorsement of the Prime Minister’s policies but a rejection of Arvind Kejriwal’s politics of deceit, deception, and inflated claims of achievement,” Ramesh stated in a post on X.
Ramesh highlighted that the Congress had actively campaigned against the alleged scams and failures of the Kejriwal-led government, which he claimed had led to public disillusionment. “The voters have delivered their verdict on Kejriwal’s 12 years of misrule. The Congress exposed his shortcomings, and the people have spoken,” he added.
While acknowledging the party’s poor performance, Ramesh pointed out that the Congress had managed to increase its vote share. “We had hoped for a better outcome, but the results did not reflect our expectations. Nevertheless, our campaign was vigorous, and our presence in Delhi remains significant. Though we may not have won seats, our electoral footprint has grown, thanks to the relentless efforts of thousands of Congress workers,” he said.
Looking ahead, Ramesh expressed confidence in the party’s future prospects. “The Congress will return to power in Delhi in 2030. We are committed to rebuilding our base and regaining the trust of the people,” he declared.
The BJP’s sweeping victory in Delhi marks a significant shift in the city’s political landscape, further consolidating the party’s dominance across the country. Meanwhile, the Congress faces an uphill battle to revive its fortunes in the national capital, where it has struggled to regain relevance since its last government in 1998.
As the political dynamics in Delhi continue to evolve, all eyes will be on how the Congress restrategizes and works to reconnect with voters in the coming years.
