Congress leader Shashi Tharoor congratulated the renowned Urdu poet Gulzar as he was being honoured with the Jnanpith Award.
Taking to X, Tharoor extended his wishes to Gulzar on winning India’s highest literary award for lifetime achievement. Tharoor hailed Gulzar for his extraordinary services to Urdu poetry, adding that he said the award was richly deserved.
Sampooran Singh Kalra, popularly known as Gulzar, is an 89-year-old celebrated personality in Hindi cinema. He is considered to be one of the finest Urdu poets of this era. Along with Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, a Sanskrit scholar, he has been named as the recipient of the 58th Jnanpith Award, as announced by the Jnanpith selection committee on Saturday.
The Jnanpith selection committee has announced that the prestigious award for the year 2023 will be given to two eminent writers that are Sanskrit litterateur Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and renowned Urdu litterateur Shri Gulzar.
The committee stated that Gulzar, who has had a long journey in the film industry, has been making significant contributions to the world of literature as well. He is credited with inventing a new genre of poetry called ‘Triveni’, which is a non-mukaffa poem consisting of three lines. Gulzar’s poetry has always been innovative and he has been focusing on children’s poetry lately, which has been receiving critical acclaim.
Gulzar is a highly acclaimed writer and filmmaker who has received several prestigious awards. These include the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2002, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, and the Padma Bhushan in 2004. He has also won five National Film Awards for his contributions to the film industry. Recently, he was awarded the Jnanpith Award, which comes with a prize of Rs 21 lakh, a statue of Vagdevi, and a citation.
The selection committee for the Jnanpith Award was led by Pratibha Rai, who is also a Jnanpith awardee. Other members of the committee included Madhav Kaushik, Damodar Mauzo, Prof Suranjan Das, Prof Purushottam Bilmale, Praful Shiledar, Prof Harish Trivedi, Prabha Verma, Dr Janaki Prasad Sharma, A Krishna Rao, and Jnanpith director Madhusudan Anand.
