WhatsApp, Telegram top among social media platforms misused by cyber criminals, says Union Home Ministry

The Union Home Ministry in its latest report stated that social media platform WhatsApp followed by Telegram and Instagram remains one of the favourite hunting grounds for online scamsters.

Reportedly, in the first three months of the year 2024, around 43,797 complaints regarding cyber frauds through WhatsApp were received followed by 22,680 complaints against Telegram and 19,800 against Instagram.

The annual Ministry of Home Affairs report 2023-24 reads that cyber fraudsters have been using Google services platforms for initiating these crimes. It stated that Google Advertisement platform provides a convenient facility for targeted advertisement from across the border.

The report mentioned that the scam, known as Pig Butchering Scam or Investment Scam is a global phenomenon and involves large-scale money laundering and even cyber slavery. It added that unemployed youths, housewives, students, and needy people are targeted, who are losing large sums of money on a daily basis.

Reports said that the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) has partnered with Google and Facebook for sharing intelligence and signals for proactive actions, such as flagging digital lending apps and its signals and abuse of Google’s Firebase domains (free hosting) by cyber fraudsters, Android Banking Malwares (Hashes), among others.

Furthermore, it also mentioned that sponsored Facebook ads are extensively used by organised cyber criminals to launch illegal lending apps in India. It underlined that such links are proactively identified and shared with Facebook, along with Facebook pages for necessary action.

The report asserted that the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre is making efforts for the capacity building of all pillars of criminal justice system, which includes Law Enforcement Agencies, Forensic Examiners, Prosecutors and Judges for imparting training in cyber security, investigation of cybercrime and digital forensics in institutes across the country.

Additionally, the ministry has also rolled out a Cyber Volunteer Framework, which enables citizens to enroll as cyber volunteers for reporting unlawful content on the Internet, dissemination of cyber hygiene and as cyber experts to aid law enforcement under which 54,833 volunteers had registered by March 31, 2024, according to the report.

Bengal Minister Babul Supriyo, BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay clash over blowing of car horn, video surfaces

Although Gangopadhyay remained in his car, his security personnel were observed trying to de-escalate the situation.

West Bengal Minister Babul Supriyo and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay engaged in a heated exchange on the Vidyasagar Bridge over the alleged honking of car horns. The video of the same has been surfaced widely on the internet.

Supriyo accused the Tamluk MP of using inappropriate language against him, while Gangopadhyay countered that it was Supriyo who resorted to unparliamentary language during their confrontation on the night of January 3, 2024.

Gangopadhyay recounted that Supriyo halted his vehicle and directed abusive language at him, asserting that the horn noise originated from a car behind his, not Supriyo’s. The former Calcutta High Court judge stated that Supriyo had exited his vehicle to confront him.

Supriyo, who serves as West Bengal’s Minister for Information Technology and Electronics, claimed his intention was simply to inform Gangopadhyay that his vehicle was speeding with the use of a hooter. “But he (Gangopadhyay) cursed at me as I approached,” added the singer-turned-politician.

Notably, Supriyo, who previously held a Minister of State position in the Narendra Modi administration, switched allegiance from the BJP to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in September 2021.

A video that surfaced later showed Supriyo demanding an apology from the BJP MP for his conduct. Although Gangopadhyay remained in his car, his security personnel were observed trying to de-escalate the situation.

Supriyo also accused Gangopadhyay’s vehicle of frequently sounding the siren, which he claimed was inappropriate since, according to him, the MP’s car lacked proper identification. However, reports indicate that the car displayed a sign reading “MP from Tamluk.”

This incident recalls previous confrontations involving Gangopadhyay, including an altercation in October last year with TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee during a parliamentary committee meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

In July of the same year, he also had a fiery exchange with Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi during his inaugural speech on the Union Budget, during which some of his remarks were later expunged from the record. The dispute erupted as Gangopadhyay was urged to conclude his speech, leading Gogoi to question him about comments he had previously made regarding Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.
