India observed the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on Saturday by paying tribute to the valour and sacrifice of its soldiers which led to India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War on July 26 that year.
On this day, the Indian Army announced Operation Vijay a success, declaring victory over Pakistan after a nearly three-month-long battle on the rocky terrains of Kargil in Ladakh.
President Droupadi Murmu led the tributes and said on X that Kargil Vijay Diwas symbolises the exceptional valour and unwavering determination of India’s jawans. She said their dedication and sacrifice continue to inspire every citizen.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tributes on the occasion and said the day serves as a reminder of the soldiers’ unparalleled courage and valour in safeguarding the nation’s honour. He said their passion to lay down their lives for the motherland will inspire every generation.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid his tributes in person at the National War Memorial and on X to the bravehearts who displayed immense courage in defending the nation in the toughest terrain. India will remain indebted to their selfless service and their supreme sacrifice, which stands as a timeless testament to the unwavering resolve of the armed forces, he added.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said he bows in reverence to the armed forces and martyrs for their valiant sacrifice in the Kargil War. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also offered his salutations and tributes to the immortal heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s integrity and identity.
The Indian Air Force paid a heartfelt tribute to the brave warriors through a 2-minute-long video showcasing a collection of photographs of the war. The video honoured the might of the soldiers and the air force.
The Kargil War, which began in May 1999, saw Pakistani infiltrators occupying strategic peaks along the Line of Control. India initiated Operation Vijay, and successfully reclaimed all occupied positions by July 26, 1999. The nation bestowed its highest military honours upon these brave soldiers, including 4 Param Vir Chakras, 9 Maha Vir Chakras, and 55 Vir Chakras. A Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, 6 Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, 8 Yudh Seva Medals, 83 Sena Medals, and 24 Vayu Sena Medals were also awarded. The Kargil War Memorial at Dras stands as a perpetual tribute to their legacy, ensuring that their courage and the spirit of sacrifice continue to inspire future generations.
