Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is currently under isolation after testing positive for Covid-19, on Monday said all Indian citizens should get Covid vaccines for free and that this needn’t be a matter of discussion anymore. He also asked the ruling BJP not to turn India into a victim of its system in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a sharp tweet, the Wayanad MP said enough of discussion. Citizens must get vaccines free of cost, end of matter. Don’t turn India into a victim of the BJP’s system.
The tweet comes in the context of Covid vaccine pricing, a debate over which has been raging even since the Centre declared, under its ‘Liberalised Pricing and Accelerated National Covid-19 Vaccination Strategy’, that there will be three different prices from May 1.
Under the liberalised strategy, Centre has opened vaccination for all citizens who are 18 years and above. The new pricing policy, however, sparked fury among many circles. India’s vaccination campaign is all set to get a major boost from May 1 when everyone above the age of 18 will be eligible for vaccine.
Maharashtra, the worst-hit state by the Coronavirus, Gujarat, Odisha and Rajasthan has said they will provide free vaccination to all, joining several other States.
However, few states accused the Centre for hijacking vaccine stocks from manufacturers and expressed doubts they would be able to launch the inoculation drive to cover those between 18-45 years of age from May 1. While some states like Kerala have declared that citizens will continue to receive the vaccines free of cost.
Gandhi and the Congress have been asking for free vaccination of all. The party has also criticised the government’s vaccination policy and the handling of the Covid situation in the country.
Amid rising Covid-19 cases in the state, the Karnataka government on Monday announced a two-week curfew from tomorrow, a day after reporting the biggest rise of over 34,000 new cases in 24 hours. Using the term closedown, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said Covid curfew will be implemented in the state from tomorrow 9 pm for the next 14 days. There will be no public transport during the curfew, the Chief Minister said.
