This year Karva Chauth will be celebrated today, on October 13. Married women will pray for their husbands’ long lives by observing a nirjala vrat by abstaining from eating and drinking for the entire day and will only consume water with their husband’s hands after witnessing the moon and praying to Karwa Mata, Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha.

History of Karva Chauth
According to the story in Mahabharata, this fast was first observed by a woman named Karva who was a devoted wife, the story behind her was that, one day while having a bath in the river, her husband was caught by a crocodile and in order to save him, Karva tied the crocodile with a cotton thread and asked the God of death – Yama to send the animal in hell. But when God Yama refused Karwa threatened to destroy him with her curse.
Scared Yama sent the crocodile to hell and gave Karva’s husband a long life. After that, Karva and her husband lived a happy life together. Since then this festival is celebrated as Karwa Chauth.
Significance of Karva Chauth
Karwa Chauth is one of the most intrinsic celebrations among married women. On this day, wives observe a day’s fast for the long life of their husbands. They begin their day before sunrise with a ritual of eating sargi as this ritual differs from community to community. They dressed like a new bride as they wear red colored clothes, which is a symbol of Hindu married women.
This day does not only symbolizes the love between a couple but also cherishes the devotion towards each other. Now-a-days even husband keep fast for the long lives of their wives. Several movies and web series may have commercialized this festival, but the importance of this day is still intact in Hindu households.
