Meghalaya: East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh resigns

Meghalaya’s East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh has resigned from the Congress party. She has announced her formal resignation from Congress by tweeting from her official handle.

On Monday, she tweeted the letter of resignation and tagged Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, former party president Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

In her resignation, Lyngdoh wrote that she has spent most of her life as a staunch supporter and foot soldier of the Indian National Congress. The party has given her the opportunity to serve the people of Meghalaya as a Minister and as a representative of my East Shillong constituency. She also wrote that the party had appointed her as a Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, and that she was greatful for the party’s support this far.

Congress has lost its direction

Lyngdoh further wrote in the letter that however, recent developments withing the party have led her to belive that the Congress has lost its sense of direction. She added that there was a dire need for the party and the leadership to consider this. She also thinks true and honest attempts at introspection have failed.

Congress lost touch with the people of Meghalaya

She furthers her letter, saying that the party has lost touch with the people of Meghalaya and that she no longer believes this was the best platform for her to serve. Therefore, with deep regret, I am writing for my formal resignation from the primary membership of the Congress with immediate effect, she added.

Ampareen Lyngdoh likely to join NPP

Notably, the resignation of Ampareen Lyngdoh from the Congress came at a time when assembly elections are to be held in Meghalaya only next year. People familiar with the matter are speculating that Lyngdoh along with another MLA was ready to join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). NPP is an ally of BJP in Meghalaya.

Last month, two MLAs from the NPP and one from the opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in Meghalaya resigned to join the BJP.

Elections in these northeastern states next year

Apart from Meghalaya, assembly elections are also due in 2023 in the northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland and Mizoram. BJP has already assured its victory in these states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the two northeastern states of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday has also been seen in connection with the same. Reactions on the resignation of Ampareen Lyngdoh are yet to come from the top Congress leaders.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sent a strong message to party members amid internal unrest following the Trinamool Congress’ electoral defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, saying those who wish to leave the party are free to do so.

The remarks come as the TMC grapples with its worst electoral performance in years and growing dissatisfaction within its ranks.

‘Will not stop anyone from leaving’

At a recent internal review meeting with party candidates, Banerjee reportedly told leaders that she would not attempt to hold back anyone planning to exit the party. She emphasised that the organisation would move forward with those who remain committed.

According to party sources, she said she would focus on rebuilding the organisation from the ground up, including restoring party offices and strengthening grassroots-level structures.

Push for rebuilding the organisation

Banerjee also called for detailed, area-wise reports from party workers and directed them to hold meetings at block and town levels to assess the reasons behind the defeat.

She further indicated that the party would undergo internal restructuring, with efforts aimed at reviving organisational strength at the local level.

Fact-finding teams and internal review

As part of the post-poll exercise, the Trinamool Congress has also set up multiple fact-finding teams to examine alleged irregularities in key districts.

These developments highlight growing internal churn within the party as it attempts to recover from its electoral setback and rebuild its support base.
