Supreme Court grants bail to journalist Siddique Kappan, in UP jail since 2020
The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan, who has been in jail since 2020, in UAPA case filed against him by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

A bench of Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justices S Ravindra Bhat and PS Narasimha observed that every person has the right to freedom of speech and expression and the material produced by the prosecution attributed to Kappan as a toolkit, seemed to be in a foreign language.
The bench also observed that the toolkit recovered by police is the only propagating call for justice for Hathras Rape.
The bench imposed certain conditions on him including asking him to surrender his passport and report to the police station every Monday. After 6 weeks, Kappan would be free to travel to his residence in Kerala. The journalist will be released in 3 days, the bench said.
The bench also directed him to report to the police in Delhi for the next six weeks after his release from Uttar Pradesh jail.
Kappan, a reporter for Malayalam news portal Azhimukham and secretary of the Delhi unit of Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), was arrested along with three others in Uttar Pradesh in October 2020 while on his way to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh where a 19-year-old Dalit woman had died after allegedly being gang-raped.
Kapan had earlier been denied bail from the Supreme Court. He was trying to disturb law and order in Hathras. They had also alleged that the accused had links with the Popular Front of India (PFI), police had claimed. Since his arrest, he has been maintaining that he is innocent and is being framed.

After Rahul Gandhi’s press conference, various leaders from the BJP’s top brass came forward to slam the Congress leader. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad addressed a press conference and accused Gandhi of making false statements and dissuading from the subject.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday spoke to the media for the first time after his expulsion from the lower house. Gandhi in the press conference said that his job is to defend the democracy in the country and further added that he will continue to raise questions about the PM-Adani relationship.
The former Congress MP also added that he won’t be scared of PM Modi as he is fighting for democracy.
The press conference by Rahul Gandhi comes after his expulsion from the lower house. The Congress leader lost his Lok Sabha membership after a court in Gujarat convicted him for 2 years in a defamation case over his statement about Modi’s surname on March 22.
As per the reports, the Court granted the Congress leader bail with a bail bond of Rs 10,000 and suspended the 2-year jail term.

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also chimed in and slammed Rahul Gandhi. The Union Minister spoke to the media and said that Rahul Gandhi is able to speak because there is democracy in this country.
He further said that Gandhi is the one speaking the most against PM Modi and countered his claims where Gandhi said that his voice is being strangled.
In the backdrop of the showdown between BJP and Rahul Gandhi, Congress party workers took to the streets in West Bengal to demonstrate against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the lower house.

Priyanka Gandhi lashes out at Centre over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification, accuses BJP of targeting Rahul Gandhi for raising Adani issue
Priyanka Gandhi, in her statement to the media, said that her brother raised the issue about Adani and questioned the BJP about it which led to Rahul Gandhi being targeted. She further said in the case which led to the former Congress chief conviction, the complainant themselves had asked for a stay and highlighted that there was a stay for over a year.

Congress’s general secretary further said that Congress and Rahul Gandhi will continue their fight and added that the blood in Congress party’s veins is the blood of all the martyrs.
