The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has filed an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) against Pakistan cricketers Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan for their provocative gestures during the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 clash in Dubai last Sunday.
According to reports, the complaint was submitted on Wednesday, and the ICC has acknowledged receipt. If the players deny the allegations, they may face a formal hearing before ICC Elite Panel Referee Richie Richardson.
The Gestures Under Scrutiny
During the September 21 high-voltage encounter, Rauf allegedly made a gesture mimicking the downing of a plane, mocking India’s past military operations, after Indian fans chanted “Kohli, Kohli” in reference to Virat Kohli’s famous sixes off Rauf in the 2022 T20 World Cup. The fast bowler was also accused of hurling abuses at Indian openers Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma.
Sahibzada Farhan, meanwhile, celebrated his milestone with a gun-firing gesture, using his bat as a prop. The act, widely criticised, has been deemed provocative and in violation of the spirit of the game. “That celebration was just a moment at that time… I don’t care how people take it,” Farhan told reporters later.
PCB’s Counter Move Against Suryakumar Yadav
In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly lodged a counter-complaint with the ICC against Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav. After India’s September 14 game, Suryakumar had dedicated the team’s win to the Indian Armed Forces engaged in Operation Sindoor, expressing solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.
PCB has argued that the remarks were “political in nature,” though questions remain over the timing of their complaint, as ICC rules mandate filing within seven days of the incident.
ACC Chairman Adds Fuel To Fire
The controversy escalated further after Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi posted a cryptic video on X (formerly Twitter). The clip featured football icon Cristiano Ronaldo seemingly gesturing an aircraft crash — reminiscent of Rauf’s on-field gesture.
Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister, has often been accused of provocative rhetoric against India, and his post has drawn sharp reactions.
Possible Sanctions And Fallout
The ICC is expected to conduct hearings soon, where both Rauf and Farhan will need to explain their actions. Failure to convince the disciplinary panel could result in sanctions under the ICC Code of Conduct.
The episode has also raised questions over whether the Indian team will share the presentation dais with Naqvi during the Asia Cup final ceremony.
The matter, being closely monitored by both ICC and BCCI officials, underscores the high tensions that often accompany India-Pakistan encounters.
