Suryakumar Yadav continued his remarkable form in IPL 2025 by breaking a milestone that had remained untouched for 15 years. The Mumbai Indians batter scored a vital 57 off 39 balls against Punjab Kings, taking his run tally for the season to 628 – surpassing the previous record of 618 runs set by Sachin Tendulkar back in IPL 2010.
In a high-stakes encounter where both teams were eyeing a top-two finish, Mumbai Indians posted 184/7 in their innings. Despite a disciplined bowling effort from Punjab Kings, it was Suryakumar and skipper Hardik Pandya who anchored the innings during crucial phases.
Rickelton and Rohit provide early momentum
Opening the innings, Ryan Rickelton made a quick 27 off 20 balls, playing some elegant shots. He struggled initially against Arshdeep Singh, who impressed with swing in the opening over. Rickelton then found boundaries off debutant Kyle Jamieson in the next over before falling to Marco Jansen in the sixth.
Rohit Sharma, who scored 24 off 21 deliveries, took time to settle but found rhythm with a confident stroke over mid-off. However, his innings was cut short by Harpreet Brar, who stepped up in the middle overs in the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal.
Punjab’s control in middle overs
Punjab Kings gained control midway through the innings, especially after Harpreet dismissed Rohit and Vyshak Vijaykumar removed both Will Jacks and Tilak Varma in quick succession. Vyshak’s strategy of bowling wide lines proved effective, keeping MI batters subdued for a significant period.
Hardik Pandya, though initially lucky to survive a dropped catch on his first ball, contributed in stabilizing the innings alongside Suryakumar.
Late acceleration leads MI past 180
The tide turned in the penultimate over when Mumbai managed 23 runs off Vyshak, shifting the momentum back in their favor. Naman Dhir chipped in with a quick 20 off 12, while Suryakumar remained the backbone of the innings.
Despite a superb final over by Arshdeep Singh, who conceded just three runs and picked two wickets, Mumbai managed to post a competitive total of 184/7.
With this performance, Suryakumar Yadav not only broke a historical record but also reinforced his reputation as one of Mumbai Indians’ most reliable batters in IPL history.
