Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Jyotiraditya Scindia have been assigned additional charges following the resignation of Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and RCP Singh. Both the ministers resigned as Union Ministers earlier in the day, with immediate effect.

Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani has been assigned as the additional charge of the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has been given the charge of the Ministry of Steel, in addition to their existing portfolios.

A day before the end of their tenure in the Rajya Sabha, on Wednesday, Naqvi and Singh both handed in their resignation letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

After Naqvi’s resignation, there won’t be any Muslim representative in the Union Council of Ministers and among the BJP’s 395 Members of Parliament. Naqvi was one of three BJP Muslim MPs whose terms expired during the recent round of Rajya Sabha elections to 57 seats across 15 states; however, the party did not nominate any of them for reelection.

After Naqvi was refused a nomination in the recent Rajya Sabha elections, there have been speculations that he is being considered for the position of vice president, whose election is set to take place on August 6, or any other key position.

One year after joining the Union cabinet on his party’s quota, Singh, a former bureaucrat who was formerly Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar and leader of the JD(U), confidante, announced his resignation on his birthday.
