British Sikh woman army officer

Captain Harpreet Chandi, an Indian-origin British Sikh army officer has completed her solo expedition to the South Pole. In doing so, she has become the first woman of colour to achieve this feat. The 32-year-old officer, who is also a physiotherapist, began her journey on November 24, 2021.

Chandi announced her achievement on her live blog by the name the Polar Preet. On Monday, January 3, 2022, after traveling 700 miles without any support, she travelled the distance within merely 40 days.

Captain Chandi’s reaction

Her post from day 40 expressed her feelings related to the expedition. There was a time when Chandi didn’t know anything about the polar world but later got interested in that and ever since then she had been preparing. For her, the expedition meant much more than just herself. She wishes to encourage people to push their boundaries, believe in themselves and to not worry about any labels.

She shared how many a times, she has been told to be normal. She believes that every individual creates their own normal and is capable of anything they wish for. Captain Chandi wishes to smash the glass ceiling into a million pieces, and she is succeeding very well indeed.

Her preparation

Captain Preet Chandi spent more than two and a half year preparing for her expedition. She trained in the Frensh Alps, trekked through Iceland’s Langjökull Glacier and spent 27 days on Greenland’s ice top. To simulate pulling a sled, she dragged a heavy tire behind her back when she was in England.

Her journey included travelling 700 miles while towing a pulk or sledge with all of her belongings and facing temperatures as low as – 50 degrees Celsius and winds of up to 60 miles per hour. She did all of this without any support.

Captain Chandi hopes that her feat will inspire others and something similar will keep happening year after year.

HMPV outbreak in china sparks concerns: Symptoms, Spread, and Preventive Measures

Hospital crowded with patients during HMPV outbreak in China

China is grappling with a surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, raising alarm over the potential for another health crisis following the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports from hospitals indicate overcrowding, with patients suffering from respiratory illnesses. Social media discussions suggest the presence of multiple viruses, including HMPV, influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and lingering COVID-19 cases.

What is HMPV?

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause infections ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to severe respiratory issues. It was first identified in 2001 and affects people of all age groups, with young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems being most vulnerable, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Symptoms of HMPV

The virus presents symptoms similar to the flu and other respiratory infections, including:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Nasal congestion
  • Shortness of breath

In severe cases, complications like bronchitis or pneumonia may arise. The incubation period typically ranges from three to six days, with symptoms varying in duration depending on the infection’s severity.

How does HMPV spread?

HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets, much like other respiratory viruses. Transmission occurs via:

  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Close personal contact, such as handshakes
  • Touching contaminated surfaces and subsequently touching the mouth, nose, or eyes

Who is at risk?

Certain groups face higher risks from HMPV, including:

  • Young children
  • Older adults
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems

Prevention measures

To minimize the risk of HMPV infection, experts recommend:

  • Regular handwashing with soap for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoiding face-touching with unclean hands
  • Maintaining distance from people showing symptoms of illness
  • Cleaning commonly touched surfaces like doorknobs and toys

Managing symptoms

If you experience symptoms resembling HMPV or a common cold:

  • Cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing
  • Wash hands frequently to reduce transmission risk
  • Avoid sharing personal items like utensils and cups
  • Stay home to rest and prevent spreading the infection

Treatment and vaccine availability

Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing complications through supportive care.

Comparisons to COVID-19

HMPV shares similarities with COVID-19, including respiratory symptoms and transmission methods via droplets. However, HMPV typically peaks during winter and spring, whereas COVID-19 spreads year-round due to evolving variants. Studies indicate HMPV cases have surged following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, likely due to reduced immunity after prolonged lockdowns.

As China battles the rise in HMPV cases, public health measures and awareness remain critical to controlling its spread and protecting vulnerable populations.

Khawaja falls on last ball of Day 1 as Australia edges ahead in fifth Test

Published

The fifth and final Test between India and Australia at Sydney saw an action-packed opening day, with the hosts gaining the upper hand. Australia reached 9/1 at stumps after bowling India out for a modest 185 in their first innings on Friday.

India’s batting lineup faltered, despite recovering briefly from 57/3 to 107/4 by tea. However, a dramatic collapse in the final session saw India lose six wickets for just 78 runs. Rishabh Pant stood out with a gritty 40 off 98 balls, while Scott Boland was the pick of the Australian bowlers, claiming 4/31. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc chipped in with crucial breakthroughs, finishing with two and three wickets respectively.

In reply, Australia suffered an early blow as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja on the last ball of the day. The delivery, edged to KL Rahul at second slip, ended Khawaja’s stay and brought an animated celebration from Bumrah, who also exchanged words with debutant Sam Konstas earlier in the over.

Australia ended the day trailing by 176 runs, with David Warner and Sam Konstas at the crease. The intensity was palpable as the Indian bowlers looked to make early inroads, with Mohammed Siraj delivering a tidy spell and Bumrah’s fiery bowling drawing attention.

Earlier in the day, the Indian tailenders swung their bats aggressively, with Bumrah contributing a quickfire 22 off 17 balls. His partnership with Siraj provided brief resistance before the innings folded. Australia’s disciplined bowling ensured that India failed to capitalize on the starts by their top order.

India captain Rohit Sharma opted to rest for the series finale, with Bumrah stepping in as the stand-in skipper. His leadership on the field was evident in his energetic approach and strategic bowling changes.

The match promises an exciting second day as India looks to capitalize on Khawaja’s dismissal and restrict Australia to a low first-innings score. With the series finale at stake, both teams will aim to deliver their best performances.

The action resumes tomorrow with Australia resuming their innings at 9/1.
