BMC reacts to viral video of patchwork on Mumbai Coastal Road

The BMC also mentioned that temporary repairs were implemented during the monsoon to mitigate further deterioration, assuring that a new asphalting layer would be applied according to the necessary specifications.

The ambitious Coastal Road project in Mumbai has faced significant criticism online after a viral video showcased evident patchwork on the newly constructed segment. An X user named Eternal Drift expressed disillusionment in the video, noting that, despite the project’s enormous investment of Rs 13,000 crore, the Coastal Road appears compromised and failing to meet its promise of world-class infrastructure. The user called for accountability from both the construction firm L&T and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

In their post, the user articulated: “This is beyond disappointing. Mumbai’s Rs 14,000 crore Coastal Road already looks like patchwork. I feel betrayed – this was supposed to be world-class infrastructure. L&T and BMC must be held accountable. Is this what we paid for?” They included hashtags such as #Mumbai, #CoastalRoad, and #InfrastructureFail to amplify their concerns. Additionally, they shared images of the Coastal Road condition to complement the video, which quickly amassed over 1 million views.

In response to the attention generated by the viral post, the BMC’s official account acknowledged the issue, attributing the damage to the timing of the asphalting work. They explained, “The asphalting work on the Northbound Carriageway of the bridge at Haji Ali was completed during the pre-monsoon period, which resulted in some separation at the joints of the work done in the subsequent days.” The BMC also mentioned that temporary repairs were implemented during the monsoon to mitigate further deterioration, assuring that a new asphalting layer would be applied according to the necessary specifications.

Despite this explanation, the initial poster remained unconvinced, questioning how such deterioration could occur so soon after the project’s completion. The Mumbai Coastal Road, intended to enhance connectivity from Marine Drive in South Mumbai to Kandivali in the western suburbs via the Bandra Worli Sea Link, inaugurated the eight-kilometer south-bound segment in March 2024. The second phase, inaugurated in June 2024, aims to significantly reduce travel time between Marine Drive and Haji Ali from 40-50 minutes to just eight minutes.

Santosh, UK’s official Oscar entry, banned from release in India

Sandhya’s dedication to her work and the issues it represents remains steadfast, as she navigates the complexities of censorship and strives to maintain the integrity of her film amidst these challenges.

British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s thought-provoking film, “Santosh”, is facing significant hurdles in obtaining a theatrical release in India due to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanding substantial cuts.

The board has specifically objected to the film’s representation of police conduct as well as its exploration of sensitive societal issues, such as caste discrimination and police brutality, which are central to the film’s narrative.

In an interview, Sandhya expressed her deep disappointment, stating, “I was eager for the film to be released in India, and I explored various options to accommodate their requests. However, the extent of the cuts required ultimately made it impossible to maintain the film’s coherence or stay faithful to its original vision.”

She emphasized that the censorship board’s demands were not merely about minor adjustments; they were so extensive that they would compromise the film’s essence.

For Sandhya, the integrity of “Santosh” is paramount. She noted that complying with the proposed changes would effectively strip the film of its original message and vision, rendering it unrecognizable. The film is particularly significant, featuring an entirely Indian cast and presented in Hindi, the predominant language of North India, which underscores its cultural roots. Interestingly, when the filmmakers initially submitted the script for approval to shoot, they encountered no objections, and the largest cinema chain in India had already agreed to distribute the film as of January.

Santosh premiered at the esteemed Cannes Film Festival, where it received widespread acclaim, highlighting its powerful storytelling and cultural relevance. It was submitted as the UK’s official entry for the Oscars in the International Feature category, showcasing its international appeal. Additionally, the film earned a nomination for Best Debut Feature at this year’s BAFTA Awards, further solidifying its recognition on a global stage.

Sandhya’s dedication to her work and the issues it represents remains steadfast as she navigates the complexities of censorship and strives to maintain the integrity of her film amidst these challenges.

Rashid Khan breaks Jasprit Bumrah’s record to become third-fastest to 150 IPL wickets

In his four overs, he conceded 48 runs, resulting in an economy rate of 12.00 while grabbing the lone wicket of debutant Priyansh Arya.

Afghanistan’s star spinner, Rashid Khan, has shattered the record previously held by India’s ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, becoming the third-fastest player to claim 150 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Rashid achieved this milestone in the opening match of the season while playing for the Gujarat Titans against the Punjab Kings. Despite his team facing a narrow 11-run defeat and Rashid only taking one wicket, he surpassed Bumrah to secure his place among the fastest bowlers to reach 150 wickets in this lucrative tournament.

Rashid’s incredible record now stands at 150 wickets from 122 matches, trailing only behind Yuzvendra Chahal (118) and Lasith Malinga (105). Notably, Rashid reached the 150-wicket mark in two fewer matches than Bumrah, who took 124 games. Beyond merely taking wickets, Rashid’s performance showcases his exceptional bowling skill; only Malinga boasts a better bowling average (19.79 compared to Rashid’s 22.00), and Sunil Narine is the sole player with a superior economy rate (6.73 versus Rashid’s 6.83) in this elite group of wicket-takers.

At just 26 years old, Rashid has flourished in the IPL, effectively utilizing his legbreak googly to outsmart batsmen. However, during the match against the Punjab Kings on a batting-friendly pitch in Ahmedabad, he struggled to maintain his usual economical style. In his four overs, he conceded 48 runs, resulting in an economy rate of 12.00 while grabbing the lone wicket of debutant Priyansh Arya.

The Kings had a commanding start, accumulating runs at a swift pace of over 12 per over after the powerplay. With the Titans needing a break in the momentum, captain Shubman Gill turned to Rashid. He managed to entice Priyansh into an ill-timed shot with a well-tossed delivery that lacked the necessary bounce and turn. This resulted in a high top edge that was comfortably caught by Sai Sudharsan, dismissing Priyansh for a quickfire 47 runs off just 23 balls.

That wicket was Rashid’s only bright spot in an otherwise difficult outing. The Punjab Kings surged to a daunting total of 243/5, propelled by captain Shreyas Iyer’s explosive unbeaten 97 and Shashank Singh’s contribution of 44 runs. In response, the Titans showed some resilience but ultimately fell short of the target, finishing just 11 runs behind.
