Actor Radhika Apte is preparing to make her directorial debut with the action-fantasy film “Koyta” (Sickle), according to reports. The film is being produced by notable Bollywood filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane, who gained recognition for his work on “Black Warrant.” This film marked the debut of Zahan Kapoor, the cousin of actor Ranbir Kapoor, adding to Motwane’s impressive resume.

Apte recently sparked mixed reactions online after a photo surfaced of her drinking champagne while pumping breast milk at the 2025 BAFTA Awards. This moment has drawn attention and discussion regarding the balance of work and motherhood in the entertainment industry.

The official announcement about Apte’s projects was made during the unveiling of the CineV-CHD Market lineup at the Cinevesture International Film Festival (CIFF). This year’s lineup features 22 diverse projects from both established and emerging filmmakers, showcasing the vibrancy of the film industry.

“Koyta” will be presented in Hindi and Marathi. The narrative follows a young migrant sugarcane cutter who is subjected to a forced medical procedure that endows her with superpowers. Armed with these newfound abilities, she seeks to liberate her family from the shackles of debt. This empowering storyline aligns with Apte’s dedication to portraying strong female characters on screen.

In addition to “Koyta,” Radhika Apte is set to appear in the upcoming period thriller “Akka,” co-starring Keerthy Suresh. The first look of “Akka” was unveiled in February during a grand Netflix event in Mumbai. Set in the 1980s within the fictional South Indian city of Pernuru, the series is centered around a matriarchal society. The plot follows the lives of powerful gangster queens whose reign faces a formidable challenge from an outsider, resulting in a brutal battle for survival and dominance.

“Akka” is penned and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty and produced by Aditya Chopra, Yogendra Mogre, and Akshaye Widhani under the YRF Entertainment banner. The series also features veteran actress Tanvi Azmi in a pivotal role, adding further depth to the captivating storyline.

The women’s wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) has written to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to grant immunity from punishment to women who commit one murder, citing the rising atrocities against women and the failure of law enforcement to protect them.

In a letter written on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Rohini Khadse, president of the NCP (SP) women’s wing, emphasized the need to address the oppressive mentality, rapist mindset, and ineffective law and order situation that women face.

Rising Crimes Against Women
Khadse highlighted the alarming rise in crimes against women, pointing to the recent gangrape of a 12-year-old girl in Mumbai as a stark example. She stated that women are demanding the right to protect themselves in the face of systemic failures.

“We, on behalf of all women, are demanding immunity (from punishment) to commit one murder,” Khadse wrote in the letter, which also targeted the state government over its handling of law and order.

Survey Highlights Unsafe Environment
The letter cited a survey report that labeled India as the most unsafe country for women, with crimes such as kidnapping, domestic violence, and sexual assault on the rise. Khadse argued that the current legal framework is insufficient to safeguard women’s rights and safety.

“We hope our demand will be granted after giving it serious thought,” Khadse added, urging the President to consider the plea as a measure to empower women and address the systemic issues they face.

The demand for immunity reflects the growing frustration among women over the lack of effective measures to combat gender-based violence. Khadse’s letter underscores the need for stronger legal protections and a more proactive approach to ensuring women’s safety.
