Union Budget: Annual TDS exemption limit on rental income increased to Rs 6 lakh

The move is projected to reduce the administrative burden associated with TDS on a considerable number of rental transactions, thus providing relief to a large segment of small property owners and those receiving rental payments.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled a series of tax reforms in her Budget 2025-26 speech, focusing on simplification and relief for taxpayers. A key highlight was the substantial increase in the tax deduction at source (TDS) threshold for rental income. This crucial adjustment raises the annual limit from ₹2.4 lakh to ₹6 lakh, significantly impacting both landlords and tenants.

The move is projected to reduce the administrative burden associated with TDS on a considerable number of rental transactions, thus providing relief to a large segment of small property owners and those receiving rental payments.

The Finance Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to streamlining the TDS framework, highlighting the reduction in the number of tax rates and a corresponding increase in threshold amounts. This simplification is intended to enhance clarity and uniformity across the tax system, making it easier for both individuals and businesses to navigate the complexities of TDS compliance. The changes aim to create a more transparent and less cumbersome tax landscape.

Beyond the changes to TDS on rental income, the Budget 2025-26 introduced provisions allowing for two self-occupied properties to be valued at zero for tax purposes. Previously, only one self-occupied property benefited from this valuation, which significantly reduces the overall tax burden for homeowners. The extension of this benefit to a second property represents a considerable concession designed to alleviate the financial pressure on a wider segment of the population.

Further enhancements to the tax system included adjustments to the tax collection at source (TCS) framework. The threshold for remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) has been elevated from ₹7 lakh to ₹10 lakh, permitting individuals to remit larger sums abroad without incurring TCS.

Furthermore, the TCS on education loan remittances has been entirely removed, a move anticipated to benefit numerous students and their families. The government has also eliminated the TCS requirement on goods transactions, further reducing compliance burdens for businesses. A comprehensive revision of TDS rates aims to ensure greater clarity and consistency across the tax system.

The Budget 2025-26 also brought welcome news for salaried individuals under the new tax regime. Income tax is eliminated for those earning up to ₹12 lakh annually, providing substantial relief to a considerable segment of the population. An additional rebate of ₹75,000 was also announced, offering further financial respite. It’s important to note that these benefits do not extend to long-term capital gains. Overall, the Budget 2025-26 showcased a strong focus on simplifying tax regulations, reducing compliance burdens, and providing targeted relief to various groups within the Indian economy.

NCP (SP) leader Rohini Khadse urges President Murmu to give immunity to women to commit one murder

“We hope our demand will be granted after giving it serious thought,” Khadse added, urging the President to consider the plea as a measure to empower women and address the systemic issues they face.

The women’s wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) has written to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to grant immunity from punishment to women who commit one murder, citing the rising atrocities against women and the failure of law enforcement to protect them.

In a letter written on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Rohini Khadse, president of the NCP (SP) women’s wing, emphasized the need to address the oppressive mentality, rapist mindset, and ineffective law and order situation that women face.

Rising Crimes Against Women
Khadse highlighted the alarming rise in crimes against women, pointing to the recent gangrape of a 12-year-old girl in Mumbai as a stark example. She stated that women are demanding the right to protect themselves in the face of systemic failures.

“We, on behalf of all women, are demanding immunity (from punishment) to commit one murder,” Khadse wrote in the letter, which also targeted the state government over its handling of law and order.

Survey Highlights Unsafe Environment
The letter cited a survey report that labeled India as the most unsafe country for women, with crimes such as kidnapping, domestic violence, and sexual assault on the rise. Khadse argued that the current legal framework is insufficient to safeguard women’s rights and safety.

“We hope our demand will be granted after giving it serious thought,” Khadse added, urging the President to consider the plea as a measure to empower women and address the systemic issues they face.

A Call for Empowerment and Justice
The demand for immunity reflects the growing frustration among women over the lack of effective measures to combat gender-based violence. Khadse’s letter underscores the need for stronger legal protections and a more proactive approach to ensuring women’s safety.

The NCP (SP) women’s wing’s appeal has sparked a debate on the balance between justice and self-defense, with many calling for a comprehensive review of laws and policies to better protect women.

As the letter reaches the President’s office, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to this bold demand for women’s empowerment and justice.
