Lok Sabha on Thursday adjourned its proceedings indefinitely, bringing the nearly two-month long Budget session to an end. The Budget session had started on January 29 and was originally slated to end on April 8 but several MPs had urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to end the session early as they focus on campaigning in five poll bound states.
As Om Birla had recently tested positive for coronavirus and was not attending the house, a panel of chairpersons, including Mehtab, Rajendra Agrawal, Rama Devi, Meenakashi Lekhi and Midun Reddy, chaired the proceedings in his abscence.
In his observations before adjourning the proceedings indefinitely, Bhartruhari Mehtab, who was in the Chair, wished Birla a speedy recovery and informed members that the Speaker was stable.
Panel of chairpersons usually consists of 10 members of the House who assist the Speaker run proceedings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several cabinet minister and former Congress President Rahul Gandhi were present in the Parliament.
The first part of the Budget session started on January 29 with the President’s address to joint sitting of both houses of Parliament. The address was boycotted by over 20 opposition parties, including the Congress, in support of the farmers protesting against the three contentious farm laws and demanding the repeal of the laws.
The Union Budget was tabled on February 1.
Thereafter, House proceedings were washed out for four consecutive days over the opposition’s demand for separate discussion on farm issues.
