Amid growing speculation of an internal rift within the Congress party, particularly concerning senior leader Shashi Tharoor’s recent praise for the BJP-led Central government, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday emphasized that the party’s leaders in Kerala remain united.
Gandhi’s statement came following a high-level meeting in Delhi, where the Congress leadership discussed strategies for the 2026 Kerala Assembly polls and issued a stern warning against leaders deviating from the party line.
In a Facebook post, Gandhi shared an image from a press conference held by Kerala Congress leaders after the meeting, captioning it, “They stand as one, united by the light of purpose ahead,” along with the hashtag ‘Team Kerala.’ The post aimed to quell rumors of discord within the party, particularly surrounding Tharoor, who has recently made statements that have raised eyebrows among his colleagues.
The meeting, held on February 28, was attended by prominent Congress leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, Rahul Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, general secretary K.C. Venugopal, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Kerala unit chief K. Sudhakaran, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader V.D. Satheesan, and Kerala in-charge Deepa Dasmunshi.
During the nearly three-hour-long discussion, Rahul Gandhi reportedly stressed the importance of adhering to the party’s political strategy and avoiding statements that could undermine its stance. Sources revealed that the leadership warned of strict disciplinary action against anyone found violating party discipline.
The meeting was convened in the wake of Tharoor’s recent comments praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and subtly hinting that he had “other options” if the Congress no longer required his services. Earlier this month, the Thiruvananthapuram MP also lauded the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government in Kerala for its policies on ease of doing business and reducing bureaucratic red tape, which did not sit well with the Congress leadership.
Additionally, Tharoor welcomed Modi’s visit to Washington in January and his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, a move that was heavily scrutinized by the Congress. These remarks fueled speculation about Tharoor’s growing dissatisfaction with the party and rumors of a potential exit.
In an effort to address the growing unease, Rahul Gandhi held a closed-door meeting with Tharoor in Delhi a week ago. Despite Tharoor dismissing rumors of switching sides, the CPI(M) signaled its willingness to welcome him if he chose to leave the Congress.
Senior CPI(M) leader Thomas Isaac stated, “Tharoor will not be an orphan in Kerala politics if he leaves the Congress. Our party has welcomed many Congress leaders in the past.” He added that it was a “miracle” Tharoor had remained in the Congress for so long.
The Congress leadership’s firm stance during the Delhi meeting underscores its commitment to maintaining unity and discipline within the party, especially as it prepares for the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. With Tharoor’s future in the party under scrutiny, the Congress faces the challenge of balancing internal cohesion with the need to address dissent constructively.
As the political landscape in Kerala evolves, the Congress’s ability to present a united front will be crucial in its efforts to regain ground in the state.
