As Maharashtra reels under intensified monsoon activity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Raigad district, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Multiple regions across the state are now under weather alerts as continuous downpours affect normal life and mobility.
Alerts across the state
According to the IMD, the monsoon is gaining momentum due to cyclonic circulations over South Central Maharashtra and the Bay of Bengal. As a result:
- Red alert: Raigad district
- Orange alert: Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune ghat section, Satara ghat section, Kolhapur ghat section
- Yellow alert: Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Nashik ghat section, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli
Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected in several districts including Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, Washim, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.
Disruption in Mumbai and nearby areas
Heavy rainfall since Sunday evening has submerged low-lying areas in Vasai-Virar, creating traffic bottlenecks and widespread inconvenience. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a public advisory via social media, warning residents of heavy rains across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and encouraging people to contact emergency services at helpline 1916.
Train services on Mumbai’s Central, Western, and Harbour lines are running behind schedule by 5 to 10 minutes due to waterlogging and low visibility.
Pune, Lavasa also hit by rains
Pune has recorded sustained rainfall since last night, with 113 mm of precipitation reported in the Varandha Ghat Shirgaon area. The Mutha Ghat near Lavasa experienced lighter showers.
Government’s preparedness and forecast
The state government has directed divisional commissioners and district collectors to stay on alert. Relief and rescue mechanisms have been activated with the state emergency operations centre in Mantralaya coordinating efforts across the state.
The IMD anticipates that the monsoon will advance further into Vidarbha, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Odisha in the coming days due to favourable weather conditions.
Although the situation remains tense, a slight relief is expected by Tuesday and Wednesday, when moderate rainfall is forecasted in Mumbai and Thane.
