Rajiv Chowk, one of the busiest stations of the Delhi Metro, can’t be entered or exited for now. Commuters can, however, interchange trains at the station. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has shut all the entry and exit gates of 20 Metro stations in the city amid huge protests against the newly passed Citizenship Amendment Act.
The stations which have been shut are:
Rajiv Chowk, Lal Quila, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk and Vishwavidyalaya, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Lok Kalyan Marg, Udyog Bhawan, ITO, Pragati Maidan Khan Market, Vasant Vihar and Mandi House, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, Janpath and Munirka.
Trains will not halt at these stations, however, interchange facility will be available at Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat and Mandi House.
For a last few days, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been shutting its stations frequently to prevent protesters from reaching the protest sites.
Due to closure of several roads on the orders of Delhi Police, the national capital has been witnessing huge traffic snarls since morning, with the Delhi-Gurgaon route coming to almost a total halt with vehicle backlog of almost 7 Km at the border.
Mobile Internet, SMS and voice calling services have been suspended in many parts of Delhi as per Delhi Police Special orders in a bid to curb the protests and restrict gathering against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Many Left leaders including Brinda Karat, Sitaram Yechuriy, Nilotpal Basu and D Raja were detained at Mandi House in Delhi during their attempt to march to Jantar Mantar.
Protests erupted across the country with several turning violent after the Parliament had passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 last week
The Citizenship Amendment Act seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who are facing religious persecution in their countries.
