Five people were thrashed by cow vigilantes in Faridabad, Haryana, on the outskirts of the national capital Delhi on the suspicion of carrying beef on Saturday, according to news agency ANI.
One of the five, identified as Azad, has been admitted to hospital with multiple fractures.
Faridabad police had registered a case against the victims under the state’s cow smuggling law. The police said they were withdrawing the case after confirming it was buffalo meat and not cow meat, media reports said.
A senior police officer of the district said a case would be registered on the complaint of the victims too. Later, another FIR was registered under sections of rioting, causing hurt and criminal intimidation against 15-20 unknown people.
The family of the victims has denied that the meat they were carrying in an auto rickshaw was cow meat.
“We were beaten black and blue and told to raise slogans like ‘Gau mata ki jai’ and ‘Hanuman ki jai’, which we refused,” said Azad. He added that the assault continued even after the policemen arrived on the scene, said a media report
Azad, being treated for his injuries at a hospital, said he and his accomplices buy meat from the Fatehpur Tageh area and sell it in the Old Faridabad meat market.
“We sell buffalo meat in Old Faridabad market and we do this every day,” he said.
The assault comes just a month after the Supreme Court delivered a strong message on cow vigilantism and told states to crack down to curb the increasing instances of cow vigilantism.
A few days back, RSS Mohan Bhagwat had stressed on a distinction between “pious” gau rakshaks, or cow protectors and criminals.
“People who are criminal and involved in violent activities should be bothered about that (remarks from Supreme Court and PM Modi),” Mr Bhagwat had said in his speech on the Sangh’s foundation day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
