PM Narendra Modi lauds his govt’s achievements, attacks critics and doubters

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday dwelt upon India’s improved ranking in World Bank’s ‘ease of doing business’ index and said implementation of GST would give it a further boost. He was chairing a session of the India’s Business Reforms event at the Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi.

“I sense a well deserved mood of celebration here, World Bank has recognised stupendous work done by us towards ease of doing business,” said PM Modi while beginning his address.

“Aur kya kaam hai mere paas, bas ek hi kaam hai – ye desh, mere desh ke sava sau crore log aur unke jeevan mein mein badlaav laana(what other work do I work other than bringing about a change in the 1.25 crore people and their lives),” he said.

Without going into specifics or details of basis on which the ease of doing business index rank was questioned, PM Modi attacked the Opposition saying had this ranking been achieved earlier, India would have been a better nation by now. He added, “Instead of questioning the ranking on the respective World Bank index, we should strive towards making India a better nation.” (Read Fine-print of India’s improved EoDB ranking is disturbing, Start Ups faltering)

“Kuch logon ko bharat ki ranking 142 se 100 hone ki baat samajh nahi aati hai, inko fark nahi padtam, (Some people do not understand the impact of India’s ranking going up from 142 to 100, they are unconcerned about it)” the PM said, adding, “Aur isme kuch log aise hain jo pehle World Bank mein reh chuke hain. Vo aaj bhi Bharat ki ranking pe sawal utha rahe hain (some of these people are those who have been with the World Bank in the past, who are raising questions on India’s ranking even today).”

“Mai aisa PM hoon jisne World Bank ki building bhi nahi dekhi hai, jabki pehle World Bank ko chalane wale log yahan baitha karte thhey (I’m a PM who has not seen the World Bank building even, while the people running World Bank used to sit here),” said Modi.

Modi said India has in three years jumped 42 places to break into top 100 countries on World Bank’s ease of doing business ranking.

“World Bank has recognised our efforts,” the PM said. Whereas there has been criticism of haphazard implementation of GST negatively impacting businesses, Modi said that India’s index would have been even better if post GST phase had been taken into account. The index was based on reforms taken only till May-end.

The GST has not just integrated the nation of 1.2 billion into one market with one tax rate but also provided a stable and transparent taxation regime, he said. This reform plus others that have already happened but need gestation and stabilisation time before they are taken into account by the World Bank, will improve the ranking, he said.

All these combined give confidence that India will accompany a place of pride in World Bank’s report next year and the year thereafter, he said.

Modi said, “India is swiftly changing for the better. I wish to list some more global recognitions which indicate this:

  • We have moved up thirty two places in the last two years in the Global Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum. This is highest for any country;
  • We have also moved up twenty one places on the Global Innovation Index of WIPO in two years.
  • We have moved nineteen places on the Logistics Performance Index of 2016 of World Bank;
  • We are among the top FDI destinations listed by UNCTAD.”

“Our mantra of reform, perform and transform with help from World Bank will surely create a better nation,” the PM said. He also said that a group of ministers is looking into issues raised by traders and businessmen regarding the tax reform and the GST Council will make the necessary changes in its next meeting on November 9-10.

Talking about employment in the country, while joblessness has grown, PM Modi said, “We are a young country and job creation is an opportunity as well as a challenge.” “Small businesses are India’s largest employer. We must reduce cost of doing business,” he said.

He also spoke of foreign investment. “We are now among the most open economies for FDI. This has resulted in increased FDI inflow, which year after year is making new records. The FDI inflows of 55.6 billion US dollars for the year ending March, 2016 were an all-time high. The following year, India registered an FDI inflow of 60.08 billion US dollars, thereby scaling an even higher peak. As a result, the total FDI received in the country has gone up by 67% in a short span of three years,” said Modi.

He added: “During the current financial year till August, total FDI of 30.38 billion US dollars has been received, which represents an increase of 30% as compared to the corresponding period last year. In August, 2017, India received a total FDI of 9.64 billion US dollars, which is the highest ever FDI received in any month.”

“Technology should be used to improve governance. Efforts are being made to make India a technology driven society,” the PM said.

“Over last three years there has been a sea change in government response, both at the Central and state level. State governments are finding innovative ways to create a business-friendly environment. This is an exciting time,” he said, adding, “Competitiveness exists alongside cooperation (in state implementation of Ease of Doing Business). The Union government has done a lot on this front including resolved multiple regulatory policies to ease business industry.” “Along with manufacturing, we’re also pushing for more growth in infrastructure development and investment climate,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu, World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva and other dignitaries attend the “India’s Business Reforms” event in New Delhi.

Meta to face Indian parliamentary panel over Zuckerberg’s election remarks

Mark Zuckerberg

Social media giant Meta will soon be summoned by India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communication and Information Technology over CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s comments regarding the 2024 Indian general election. Nishikant Dubey, BJP MP and chairman of the panel, stated that Meta would be held accountable for allegedly spreading misinformation.

“Misinformation in a democratic country damages its image. The organization must apologize to the Parliament and the people for this mistake,” Dubey said in a post on X.

Zuckerberg, during a January 10 podcast, referred to the global erosion of trust in governments post-Covid. He claimed that in 2024, major elections worldwide, including India’s, saw incumbents losing power, linking this trend to factors such as inflation, economic policies, and pandemic handling.

The statement was swiftly fact-checked by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who clarified that India’s 2024 general elections reaffirmed public trust in the NDA led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“As the world’s largest democracy, India conducted its 2024 elections with over 640 million voters. People reaffirmed their trust in the NDA under PM Modi’s leadership. Zuckerberg’s claim is factually incorrect,” Vaishnaw posted on X.

He also highlighted Modi’s governance during Covid, emphasizing free food for 800 million citizens, 2.2 billion free vaccines, and economic recovery efforts that positioned India as a fast-growing economy. Vaishnaw expressed disappointment in Meta for allowing such misinformation, urging the platform to prioritize factual reporting.

While the BJP saw a slight dip in seats during the 2024 elections, the NDA comfortably retained power with its allies’ support. This marked Modi’s historic third consecutive term as Prime Minister, making him only the second Indian leader after Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve this milestone.

The controversy surrounding Zuckerberg’s remarks underscores the growing scrutiny of social media platforms in influencing political discourse and the need for accountability in the digital space.

Two soldiers were tragically killed and two others injured when an Army vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Saturday.

The accident took place near the SK Payen area, leaving the soldiers with serious injuries. The injured personnel were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the loss of the two soldiers has left the entire region in mourning.

This unfortunate incident follows another similar tragedy that occurred just a month ago in Poonch. In that accident, five soldiers lost their lives, and five others were injured when their truck fell into a 300-foot gorge. The Army’s White Knight Corps paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, sharing a statement on social media expressing their deepest condolences for the “brave soldiers” who had been serving on operational duty in the Poonch sector.

The latest loss has drawn widespread expressions of grief from political leaders. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his sorrow, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi offered his heartfelt tributes to the martyrs. He also wished for a swift recovery for the injured soldiers and extended his deepest condolences to their grieving families.

These two incidents highlight the ongoing risks faced by soldiers in the line of duty, and the sacrifices made in protecting the nation. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident, while the military community comes together to mourn the tragic losses.

Aligarh man’s journey ends in arrest as Pakistani woman declines marriage proposal

India-Pakistan International Border

A 30-year-old Indian man, Badal Babu, from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district, is in judicial custody in Pakistan after illegally crossing the border to meet his Facebook friend, only to be rejected. The woman, identified as 21-year-old Sana Rani, told authorities she has no interest in marrying him.

The arrest took place in Mandi Bahauddin, a district in Pakistan’s Punjab province, roughly 240 kilometers from Lahore. Babu was detained under sections 13 and 14 of Pakistan’s Foreign Act for entering the country without proper documentation.

A Facebook friendship turns sour

According to Punjab police officer Nasir Shah, the duo had been friends on Facebook for over two and a half years. Babu, in love with Rani, decided to cross the border illegally to propose. However, Rani’s statement to the police made it clear she had no intention of marrying him.

Shah added, “Babu crossed into Pakistan illegally and reached Maung village, where he was apprehended. Whether he met Rani in person remains unclear.”

Family under scrutiny

Reports suggest that intelligence officials questioned Rani and her family about her relationship with Babu. Although there is speculation that Rani may have given her statement under duress, this remains unconfirmed.

Legal proceedings begin

Babu, who narrated his “love story” to authorities, was presented in court, which placed him in judicial custody for 14 days. His next hearing is scheduled for January 10.

A familiar tale across borders

Babu’s story echoes previous cross-border romances fostered through social media or online games.

  • In a widely publicized case, Indian woman Anju traveled to Pakistan to marry Nasrullah, converting to Islam before tying the knot.
  • Similarly, Seema Haider, a Pakistani woman, crossed into India via Nepal to marry her PUBG friend after bringing her four children along.
  • Last year, 19-year-old Pakistani girl Iqra Jiwani married Indian national Mulayam Singh Yadav in Nepal after meeting him online.

While these cases highlight the unifying power of social media, they also underscore the legal and personal challenges of navigating cross-border relationships.
