A second team of opposition MPs from the Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) today visited the relief camp at Don Bosco School in Manipur’s Churachandpur district to meet the ethnic violence victim. Earlier today, they landed in Imphal from where they flew to Churachandpur via helicopter due to security reasons.
A delegation of 21 MPs from the INDIA bloc began their two-day visit on Saturday. They will assess the situation on the ground in the violence-hit state from July 29 to 30.
As only one helicopter was available, the members of the delegation were divided into two teams, and the chopper made two trips to ferry them, as per the report.
After visiting a relief camp in Churachandpur district, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said it has been clear from their faces that they are extremely scared. They do not want to talk to anyone. They know that the current government will not provide any help to them.
During the visit to Manipur, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Jha said we met several people in the relief camp here and listened to their problems. We have assured them that there will be a change in the situation and we are all working in that direction.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the Central government was saying that peace has been restored in Manipur, but people have been living in camps. They are unable to go back to their homes. He added opposition would like to accompany PM Modi if he decides to visit Manipur with an all-party delegation.
After visiting a relief camp in Churachandpur district, Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev said it was important for the opposition to come and meet the victims here, the sad part is that the Government of India should have sent a delegation but opposition parties have to send a delegation here.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that they are ready for discussion in Parliament. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union HM Amit Shah have also said that they want to have discussions on the Manipur issue, but the opposition has been trying to politicise the issue.
Former Manipur CM Okram Ibobi Singh expressed his opinion on the opposition visit and said we are extremely happy to welcome this team representing MPs from around 26 political parties. They should visit the relief camps and meet people who are out of their homes for almost 3 months now. They should inform the government about the situation so that normalcy is restored as early as possible. We will discuss with the members regarding our demand for the resignation of the Manipur active CM.
