In a commendable healthcare initiative, the Indian Army organized a five-day advanced eye surgical camp at the 158 Base Hospital in Bagdogra, West Bengal, from March 20 to 24. The camp focused on providing ophthalmic care to ex-servicemen and their families, successfully performing over 350 cataract surgeries and screening 1,752 individuals for various eye ailments.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the camp was led by Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Head of Ophthalmology at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi. A renowned surgeon with over one lakh eye surgeries to his name, Brigadier Mishra emphasized that this initiative brought world-class treatment to the Himalayan foothills, covering veterans from West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and even Nepal.

A specialized team from Army Hospital (R&R), Base Hospital Delhi Cantt, and Command Hospital Lucknow conducted the surgeries using state-of-the-art equipment and premium-quality lenses. Additionally, over 500 pairs of high-grade spectacles were distributed free of cost.

The camp’s reach extended beyond Indian borders, as 17 ex-servicemen and dependents from Nepal were also screened, with some undergoing cataract surgery free of charge — reflecting the Army’s commitment to serving veterans across regions.

The initiative was carried out under the directives of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, following a request from West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose. The effort was also supported by the Trishakti Corps, showcasing coordination between state and defence forces to enhance healthcare access for veterans.

This initiative reaffirms the Indian Army’s commitment to safeguarding the health and welfare of those who once safeguarded the nation.
