23 dead in Punjab firecracker factory blast: CM assures Help

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]At least 23 people were killed and 27 injured after a massive explosion on Wednesday (September 4) at an unauthorized firecracker manufacturing factory in Punjab’s Gurdaspur. Several people were feared trapped under the debris as the building crumbled.

The incident took place around 4 pm at the factory located in a residential area in Gurdaspur’s Batala, Inspector General SPS Parmar said.

The factory was completely destroyed and four to five buildings were damaged too. Window panes were shattered and the roof of a couple of buildings came down, according to news agency PTI. A car and a bike were also destroyed in the blast. 

Locals said the explosion was so strong that it was heard kilometres away.

Locals also complained the firecracker unit was running illegally for many years. 

“The firecracker factory has been working in this locality for the many years. We have complained against the factory seven-eight times to the local administration, but no action has been taken against it,” a local resident told the media.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF and the State Disaster Response Force or SDRF are deployed for rescue operation.

He announced Rs 25,000 compensation for those with minor injuries. The CM also directed both the civil and police administration of Gurdaspur district to extend all possible help to the victims’ families in this hour of grief. He also directed the Deputy Commissioner, Gurdaspur, to provide the best possible treatment to the injured free of cost, besides asking SSP Batala to supervise the evacuation operations being carried out by the NDRF teams.

Indian boxing icon and Olympic medalist Mary Kom has addressed swirling rumours about her personal life, confirming through a legal statement that she and her husband, Karung Onkholer, finalized their divorce on December 20, 2023.

The announcement, issued via her advocate, clarified that the separation was mutual, formalized under Kom Customary Law in the presence of family and clan leaders. The statement also firmly refuted speculation linking Mary Kom romantically to her business associate, Hitesh Choudhary, or to another boxer’s husband, urging media to cease spreading unfounded claims.

The statement read, “Ms. M.C. Mary Kom and Mr. Onkholer Kom are no longer married, having mutually agreed to divorce on December 20, 2023. Rumors of my client’s involvement with Mr. Hitesh Choudhary or any other individual are baseless and must not be propagated.”

A catastrophic fire tore through the Rituraj Hotel, a budget lodging in the crowded Mechuapatti area of Burrabazar, central Kolkata, on Tuesday evening, killing at least 14 people and injuring 13 others, police reported.

The blaze, which erupted around 7:30 p.m., transformed the four-storey building into a death trap, with most victims succumbing to suffocation, while others perished after leaping from upper floors in desperation.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma initially reported 15 fatalities but later revised the toll to 14 after verifying hospital and rescue records. “There was some confusion in early reports, but we’ve confirmed 14 deaths,” Verma told reporters.
